The Greatest person killed in the time of Prophethood was Hamza bin Abdul Mutalib, he was killed and mutilated. The Prophet cried when he saw him and said: (I will never face a loss like you, ever). He did not make this day one of sadness or a memorial.

If the wailing and self flagellation the Shia do on the day of Al-Hussain's death was intellectually reasonable, then it would be permissible for the Ummah to do so every of the year; because there is no day which does not coincide with the death of a righteous Imam.

Ali bin Abi Talib was wrongfully killed, his son Al-Hussain lived for 21 years more after him and did not make a memorial for his father. The Shia do not do for Ali RadiAllah they do for Al-Hussain, despite Ali being greater in virtue than his son.
