The Poisonous Effects of Sin on the Heart

The Corrupting Impact of Sin on the Soul

Poisonous Sins

When there are many sins they leave a mark on the heart of the person who commits them, so he becomes one of the negligent.

As one of the salaf said, concerning the Ayah “Nay! But on their hearts is the Raan (covering of sins and evil deeds) which they used to earn” [83:14] – this means sin after sin.

Sins are poison. They compromise the welfare of your heart and contaminate your soul. This is why Allah warned us against them and made the prohibited.

Every time you find yourself drawn to a sin, remember that you hurt no one but yourself!

At the end of every forbidden relationship:

At the end of every forbidden relationship:

No one has the right to another, even if he causes harm to one of the parties. Both of them betrayed Allah and His Messenger, and that was the ending that did not satisfy either of them, as a result of the beginning that did not please Allah.

Whoever loses his heart destroys his soul.

Every forbidden relationship will remain forbidden even if you share the night standing and prostrating, even if you were cooperating together in good:

Because what is built on falsehood is falsehood.

Even if you get married, that sin will remain on your shoulders unless you repent and ask for mercy and forgiveness.

And always remember:

The forbidden comes before the ‘ayb (what’s seen as shameful or bad) and your Lord is before the people.”

THE HIDDEN AND OPEN SIN | Repent and strive for the Hereafter

THE HIDDEN AND OPEN SIN | Repent and strive for the Hereafter

﷽
➖➖➖
Allah ﷻ says in Surah An'am

_Leave sin, open and secret_

Qatadah رحمه الله said: "encompasses sins committed in public and secret, whether few or many"

_Indeed, those who commit sin will be punished for what they earn._
[6:120]
_
Whether the sins they committed were public or secret, Allah ﷻ will compensate them for these sins.
Ibn Abi Hatim recorded that An-Nawwas bin Sam`an said, "I asked Allah's Messenger about Al-Ithm. He said,

_The sin is that which you find in your heart and you dislike that people become aware of it._
[Tafsir Ibn Kathir]
_
We must all recognise that we have sins and we are sinful!
But the greatest test and the one of the greatest things a Believer can do to become closer to Allah ﷻ is to remove himself, make Hijrah from the sins which cloud his heart!
_
As Prophet ﷺ said _"There is no heart that does not have clouds like the clouds that cover the moon. When the cloud covers it, it is dark, and when the cloud moves away it shines.”_
[Narrated by al-Tabaraani in al-Awsat, and classed as saheeh by al-Albaani]
_
Sufyan Ath Thawri رحمه الله said _"Imaan is not wishes or pretence, rather it is what has settled in the heart and is proven by actions"_
_
We must prove to ourselves and to Allah ﷻ that we love Him ﷻ more than ourselves,
This is by choosing His commands over our desires!
_
If I was to say "Raise your hand if you love Allah ﷻ and His Rasool ﷺ"
Every single one of you would!
_
But we must substantiate our claim with 'Amal!
With good actions!
And part of doing good is doing our best to stay away from the bad!
_

_And whoever desires the Hereafter_

wanting the Hereafter and its blessings and delights,

_and strives for it, with the necessary effort due for it_

seeking it in the right way, which is following the Messenger .

_while he is a believer,_

means, his heart has faith, i.e., he believes in the reward and punishment,

_Then such are the ones whose striving shall be appreciated,_
[17:19]
Means, rewarded by Allah ﷻ
_
Reflect on these verses

May Allah ﷻ forgive all our private sins as well as public sins and make us among the true believers.

From Worldly Deception to Heavenly Bliss: Avoiding the Disbeliever's Fate in the Quran

The Deception of Worldly Life: How Disbelievers Miss the Mark

﷽
➖➖➖
WHO ARE THE DISBELIEVERS?
➖➖➖
Their Ultimate Punishment
➖➖➖

Who are the disbelievers?

Allah ﷻ says in Surah Al-A'raf:

الَّذِينَ اتَّخَذُوا دِينَهُمْ لَهْوًا وَلَعِبًا

Those who took their religion as amusement and play

And the life of this world deceived them

So this day, we will forget them just as they forgot their meeting on this day
[7:51]
_
Ibn Abbas رضي الله عنه said “They will be forsaken just as they had forsaken the meeting of this day of theirs.”

Mujahid said “They shall be left in the fire”

As-Suddi said “We shall leave them from any mercy just as they left any action on behalf of this meeting of theirs on this day.”
_
Allah ﷻ ends the ayah

and as they used to reject Our Ayat.
[7:51]
_
Allah ﷻ also says

Like that our Ayaat came to you, and you forgot them, likewise today you are forgotten.
[20:126]

This is the response in another set of Ayaat, where the slave far from the remembrance of Allah ﷻ will say

He will say “My Lord why have you raised me blind, when I was once seeing?”
[20:125]
_
Do you not see?
The disbelievers will be in such torment!

No Light, Blind!
Forgotten and neglected on the day of horror! The day they need Allah ﷻ the most!
_
Do you not see how choosing to share even an inch of characteristics with the disbelievers is dangerous?

How many of us are muslim, yet we don’t take the Deen of Allah seriously?
_
Ya Ibn Adam! Jannah is real! Jahannam is real! The pangs of Death are real! Qiyamah is real! Will you not act in preparation?
_
May Allah ﷻ forgive us, save us from all punishments and enter us into Jannah Al Firdous Al A’la through His mercy.

Don't Be Deceived: The Hidden Sins Weighing You Down (A Gentle Reminder)

SINS THAT ARE TAKEN LIGHTLY

﷽
➖➖➖
*Don't Belittle Any Deed*
➖➖➖
 Some people say
_"I don't have any sins, I can't be better than what I am, I don't have any major sins"_

Such people have however forgotten many of the other sins that occur in their life.

He forgets that he prayed without Khushoo', and he forgot from his sins that he prostrated whilst thinking about other than Allah ﷻ.

The point is we shouldn't be self satisfied people, happy and feeling secure from the punishment of Allah ﷻ.
Just because we may pray Salah or give Sadaqah etc. And we may not fornicate or drink alcohol.
_
And because of our negligence, we have forgotten that even the smallest actions will be accounted for!
_
Remember, some will say

*Oh woe to us! What is this book*

*It does not omit a single small action or big action except it is accounted for!*
[18:49]
_
We forget these small sins, yet they will weigh heavy because they will have accumulated on the scales in great numbers! And because we forgot about them, we forgot to repent for them and consequently they stayed in our book of deeds.

As Allah ﷻ says:

*So whoever does an atom's weight of good will see it,*

*And whoever does an atom's weight of evil will see it.*
[99:7-8]
_
So how then can we feel secure? When we belittle sins and are satisfied with the little that we do?
_
No! We shouldn't be satisfied with ourselves!

Rather we should constantly be looking to improve and make ourselves higher in rank with Allah ﷻ!
_
So if we pray, where is our attention and Khushoo'? If we recite the Qur'an, where is our Tajweed, where is our pondering? When we sit with our parents and elders, where are our manners and character?
_
Allah ﷻ says in the Qur'an:

*وَنَضَعُ ٱلۡمَوَٰزِينَ ٱلۡقِسۡطَ لِيَوۡمِ ٱلۡقِيَٰمَةِ فَلَا تُظۡلَمُ نَفۡسٞ شَيۡـٔٗاۖ وَإِن كَانَ مِثۡقَالَ حَبَّةٖ مِّنۡ خَرۡدَلٍ أَتَيۡنَا بِهَاۗ وَكَفَىٰ بِنَا حَٰسِبِينَ*

*And We place the scales of justice for the Day of Resurrection, so no soul will be treated unjustly at all. And if there is [even] the weight of a mustard seed, We will bring it forth. And sufficient are We as accountant.*
[21:47]
_
May Allah ﷻ forgive our minor sins and major sins, and keep us steadfast upon His Deen.

Guidance or Misguidance: The Weight of Responsibility in Islamic Teachings

The sin for being the first‼️

Allah ﷻ said:
{ لِیَحۡمِلُوۤا۟ أَوۡزَارَهُمۡ كَامِلَةࣰ یَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِیَـٰمَةِ وَمِنۡ أَوۡزَارِ ٱلَّذِینَ یُضِلُّونَهُم بِغَیۡرِ عِلۡمٍۗ أَلَا سَاۤءَ مَا یَزِرُونَ }

“Let them bear their burdens in full on the Day of Judgment as well as some of the burdens of those they mislead without knowledge. Evil indeed is what they will bear!” [Surah An-Naḥl: 25]

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“...And he who calls to misguidance, he shall have to carry (the burden) of its sin, like those who committed it, without their sins being diminished in any respect.” [Muslim, 2674]

He ﷺ also said:

"None is killed unjustly, except the first son of Adam will have a share in the sin." [ Bukhari, 7321]

What Happens When Allah Removes the Ability to Worship?

The Consequences of Sins That Make Allah Remove the Ability to Worship

The consequences for sins is not always physical pain sometimes
Allah removes from you the ability to worship Him.

How many people we know who abandon salah and do so many
evil sins and don't feel shame about it nor have the ability to repent and obey Allah.

Nothing is worse than Allah removing ibadah from you in this world and more punishment
in the hereafter.

May Allah guide us all to what pleases Him.

may we never be tested with our deen Ameen

In the meantime, we can do the following to protect ourselves from Allah's punishment:

  • Strive to be close to Allah. This means doing things that please Him, such as praying, fasting, giving charity, and reading the Quran.
  • Repent of our sins. When we sin, we should immediately repent and ask Allah for forgiveness.
  • Seek Allah's help. We should pray to Allah to help us stay on the straight path and to protect us from sin.
  • Be mindful of our surroundings. We should avoid places and situations where we are likely to sin.
  • Be patient. It takes time and effort to stay close to Allah. We should not give up if we make mistakes.

How to keep the heart pure from sin | Islamic Reminder

How to keep the heart pure from sin | Islamic Reminder

THE STAIN COVERING THE HEART

➖➖➖

*Keeping The  Heart Pure*

➖➖➖

Allah ﷻ says

_No! Rather, the stain has covered their hearts of that which they were earning._

[83:14]

Meaning, The only thing that blocked their hearts from believing in it is the dark covering cast over it from the many sins and wrong they committed that has covered up their hearts.

This dark covering known as Raan overcomes the hearts of the disbelievers

_

As the Prophet ﷺ said _"Verily, when the servant commits a sin a black spot appears upon his heart. If he abandons the sin, seeks forgiveness, and repents, then his heart will be polished. If he returns to the sin, the blackness will be increased until it overcomes his heart. It is the covering that Allah has mentioned: No, but on their hearts is a covering because of what they have earned.”_

[Sunan al-Tirmidhi‌ 3334]

_

Sins strengthen the Shaytaan that accompanies you and the Nafs against you.

It makes it harder for the Noor of Allah ﷻ to enter the Heart.

_

Imam As Shafi'i رحمه الله went to his teacher complaining of bad memory,

So his teacher advised him to stop sinning.

Because the Noor of Ilm is prevented from the heart when sins are committed.

_

A person will commit a sin, and it will affect him little, but when it eventually builds up, his heart soon becomes hard and averse to the Ayaat of Allah ﷻ,

_

And this humiliates a person internally and externally.

For example, The person who commits Zina gains a bad reputation, and their own Imaan weakens when they can't find a righteous spouse.

The girl is known as a slut, and the Boy is known as a player.

Both are a humiliation which decreases them before Allah ﷻ and the people!

_

How many people do you see, they didn't pray Salah when they were young and now in their middle years and older years they struggle?

How many do you see, they wasted their youth, and now they struggle to recite Qur'an in their old age?

How many do you see, forgot Allah ﷻ and by the end of it, lost their Deen entirely?

_

There has to come a point where you say

Stop! Stop!

_

And you repent to Allah ﷻ!

_

Our hearts are never in the same condition all the time. It is therefore important that we ask Allah ﷻ to keep our hearts firm upon His Deen.

It is reported by Anas رضي الله عنه : The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would often make this dua:

*يَا مُقَلِّبَ الْقُلُوبِ ثَبِّتْ قَلْبِي عَلَى دِينِكَ*

_O turner of the hearts, affirm my heart upon your religion!_

[Sunan Tirmidhi‌ 2140, Grade: Sahih]

_

Learn this dua and make it a habit to always make this dua.

May Allah ﷻ keep our hearts firm upon His Deen.

What is the major sin in Islam | Shirk

MAJOR SINS IN ISLAM | Hadith reference

1. Shirk (Associating partners to Allaah):

• Indeed, Allaah does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills. And he who associates others with Allaah has certainly gone far astray.
- An-Nisa' 4:116

• Indeed, he who associates others with Allaah, Allaah has forbidden him Paradise, and his refuge is the Fire.
- Al-Ma'idah 5:72

• Allaah said: "I am the One, One Who does not stand in need of a partner. If anyone does anything in which he associates anyone else with Me, I shall abandon him with one whom he associates with Allaah."
- Sahih Muslim 2985

What are the 3 types of sins that Shaitaan commands

The 3 types of sins that Shaitaan commands

Allaah تعالى said:

❝{and follow not the footsteps of Shaitaan (Satan). Verily, he is to you an open enemy. He commands you only what is Soo’ (evil) and Fahshaa’, and that you should say against Allaah what you know not}❞ [Surah al-Baqarah (2): 168-169]

Shaikh Ibn al-Uthaymeen رحمه الله explained:

❝Al-Soo’: every type of disobedience and Minor sins.

Al-Fahshaa’: Major sins, like fornication.

Shaitaan commands to do both type of sins, the minor as well as the major ones.
The minor sins are removed by the good deeds as long as the person avoids the major sins.
Still the Shaitaan commands the people to do the minor sins because, when a person does a sin after another, it corrupts him and it corrupts his heart.

Shaitaan also commands one to say against Allaah without knowledge, i.e. you attribute a saying to Allaah without knowledge.❞

--end of quote from the Tafseer by Shaikh Ibn al-Uthaymeen.

This is how Shaitaan gradually deceives the people. He engages them in minor sins. Once they are adapted to these minor sins, he directs them towards the major sins.

But the worst of all these sins is that a person speaks about Allaah and His Deen without knowledge. Making things Halaal or Haraam according to his understanding; interpreting the Book of Allaah according to his understanding; overlooking the authentic Ahaadeeth because it conflicts with his understanding and so on.

We seek refuge in Allah the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing, from the cursed Shaitan

What is backbiting (Ghibah) and Gossiping (Namimah)

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT BACKBITING (GHĪBAH) AND GOSSIPING (NAMĪMAH)

what is backbiting?

1- on the authority of abū hurayrah [‏رضي الله عنه] who said:

the prophet ‎ﷺ said: “do you know what ghībah (backbiting) is?”

they said “Allāh and His messenger know best”.

he ‎ﷺ said: “mentioning your brother with what he dislikes.”

2- when ibn ʿumar was asked what backbiting is he said:

backbiting is to say what is true [about your brother] (behind his back) and slander is to say what isn’t true [about your brother] (behind his back).

3- ʿawn bin ʿabdillāh said:

if you say about a man what you know he will dislike, then you have backbitten him.

4- al-ḥasan said:

we fear that our saying: “ḥumayd is tall” is backbiting.

5- on the authority of ʿāʾishah [‏رضي الله عنها] who said:

i mentioned a woman once, and i said about her: “she is short” so the nabī ‎ﷺ said to me: you backbited her.

the consequences of ghībah

6- kaʿab [‏رحمه الله] said:

indeed, backbiting corrupts good deeds.

7- qatādah [‏رحمه الله] said:

it was mentioned to us that the punishment of the grave is split into three: a third for backbiting, a third for not cleaning oneself properly after urinating and a third for gossiping.

8- ʿumar bin al-khaṭṭāb [‏رضي الله عنه] said:

don’t busy yourselves with mentioning other people for indeed it is a calamity, but rather upon you is mentioning Allāh, for it is mercy.

9- abū al-dardāʾ [‏رضي الله عنه] said:

i advise you with mentioning Allāh, as it is a cure, and i prohibit you from mentioning other people, as it is a disease (for the heart.)

10- jābir said:

we were sitting with the prophet ‎ﷺ, when we smelt the stench of a rotting corpse, so the prophet ‎ﷺ said: “do you know what this smell is? indeed, this smell is that of those who backbite the believers.”

the prohibition of being two-faced

11- on the authority of ʿammār bin yāsir who said that the messenger of Allāh ‎ﷺ said:

whoever is two-faced in the dunyā will have two tongues of fire on yawmul qiyāmah.

12- on the authority of abū hurayrah who said that the prophet ‎ﷺ said:

you will find that the most evil of Allāh’s servants on yawmul qiyāmah is the one with two faces, the one who goes to some people with some speech, and then goes to other people speaking about the first group, and then goes to other other people speaking about the other groups.

13- gharīb al-hamdānī said:

i said to ibn ʿumar: when we used to enter upon people, we would praise them for that which they don’t have, then when they left us we would make duʿāʾ to Allāh against them.

so ibn ʿumar told me: “we used to consider this to be hypocrisy.”

14- abū al-shaʿthāʾ said:

i said to ibn ʿumar: when people would enter upon us, we would speak to them normally, then when we leave, we would say other than that.

ibn ʿumar then said: “in the time of the messenger ‎ﷺ, we would count that as hypocrisy.”

15- al-ḥasan used to say:

beware of backbiting, for by Allāh, it is faster in giving good deeds [to the one who was backbit] than wood being burnt by fire.

when is backbiting allowed?

16- the prophet ‎ﷺ said:

do you care about mentioning the wicked-person when people will know him? mention him with what he does, so you can warn the people of him.

17- zayd bin aslam [‏رحمه الله] said:

rather, [it only counts as] backbiting for those who do not make their sins public.

18- ibrāhīm al-nakhaʿī [‏رحمه الله] said:

there are three whom we did not consider [mentioning them] to be backbiting: the wrongdoer, fāsiq and a person of bidʿah (heresy, innovation).

19- al-ḥasan [‏رضي الله عنه] said:

there is no prohibition [of backbiting] between you and a fāsiq.

20- al-ḥasan [‏رضي الله عنه] also said:

there is no [ruling of] backbiting for the mubtadiʿ (heretic).

21- rasūl Allāh ‎ﷺ said:

indeed, when the fāsiq is praised, Allāh is angered and His throne shakes because of that.

22- al-ṣaltu bin ṭarīf said:

i asked al-ḥasan: if i mention a fāsiq who publicises his sin by what he does, have i fallen into backbiting?

he said: “no, for he has no worth.”

23- zāʾidah bin qudāmah said:

i asked manṣūr bin al-muʿtamir: when i am fasting, can i insult the ruler?

he said: no.

so i asked: what about a person of desires (i.e. an innovator)?

he said: yes.

24- al-ḥasan said:

if someone’s ʿawrah is showing, then there is no [ruling of] ghībah for them, and the same goes for the effeminate man (i.e. a homosexual).

the expiation for backbiting

25- mujāhid [‏رحمه الله] said:

the expiation for backbiting your brother is to praise him and make duʿāʾ for him.

26- abī ḥāzim [‏رضي الله عنه] said:

the expiation for backbiting is to seek forgiveness for the one you backbit.

what has been reported regarding gossiping (namīmah)

27- the messenger of Allāh ‎ﷺ said:

the gossiper will not enter jannah.

28- shubayl bin ʿawf used to say:

whoever hears of an act of wickedness, then spreads it, then he is like the one who started it.

29- ḥakīm bin jābir [‏رحمه الله] said:

whoever spreads an act of wickedness is like the one who starts it.

30- the prophet ‎ﷺ said:

the best servants of Allāh are those who remind you of
Allāh when they are seen. the worst servants of Allāh are those who carry gossip, separating between loved ones and seeking misery for the innocent.

[TAKEN FROM: DHAMM AL-GHĪBAH BY IBN ABĪ AL-DUNYĀ]
(translated by abū idrīs al-sūdānī)

ibn qudāmah said:

know that gossip mainly applies to a person speaking about another, like for example, saying: “so and so said such and such abouf you,” yet it is not restricted to just this. it is also in regards to dislike that which is disliked to disclose, from a saying or action. even if you saw a person bury wealth for himself and you were to mention that to someone else it is deemed as gossiping. all which is transmitted in such was in gossip. in such case, there are six things you should do when receiving such tales:

1- do not believe him, for the testimony of a gossiper is rejected

2- advise the gossiper and warn him from such actions

3- hate him for the sake of Allāh, for Allāh hates him

4- do not think evil of the one who he is gossiping to you about

5- do not investigate to see if it’s true or not

6- do not tell anything that the gossiper told you to anyone else.

The scariest verses in the Qur'an are those when Allah speaks about punishing a persons heart.

The scariest verses in the Qur'an are those when Allah speaks about punishing a persons heart.

When you've transgressed so much that a lock is placed upon your heart, or hypocrisy enters it causing you to meet your Lord as a hypocrite. Allah comes between a person and their heart

These verses are also severe reminders that you don't own anything. Not even your own heart.
The sincere is given more sincerity, the heedless is only increased in their heedlessness.
This is why the most important duas to make are those for the well being of your own heart.

The salaf and the righteous would often state that their biggest fear was to lose iman at the time of death.
The prophet عليه السلام would often ask to have a heart that is always firm. I think we make light of this issue when in reality it is so severe.

The very heart within my chest, that I may feel I have a good grasp on could just turn and switch on me tomorrow.
How could we ever allow a day to go by without asking Him to keep our hearts stable upon all that is good.

Our Lord! Do not let our hearts deviate after you have guided us. Grant us Your mercy. You are indeed the Giver ˹of all bounties

Ruling on Turning back to sins after Ramadān:

Turning back to sins after Ramadān:

One of the Salaf was asked about a people who worship Allāh in Ramadān, safeguarding the obligatory prayers and safeguarding the obligations in the month of Ramadān.

However, when Ramadān departs they forsake these things and neglect them.
So he said,

“How evil are a people who do not know Allāh except in Ramadān.”

It is obligatory upon the Muslim to be conscious of Allāh and to constantly obey Him, inside of Ramadān and outside of it; and this is the meaning of the Saying of Allāh,

"O you who believe, fasting has been prescribed for you like it was prescribed for those before you, so that you may attain piety.” [Sūrah al-Baqarah: 183]

This means that through this noble month and through your adherence to the obedience of Allāh you obtain the fear of Allāh [تبارك وتعالى]. This is why the month of Ramadān is a huge opportunity to attain the provisions of piety by way of this month.

Allāh said,

"And take a provision (with you) for the journey, but the best provisions is piety." [Sūrah al-Baqarah: 197]

And Allāh said,

"Verily, the most honorable of you with Allāh are those from you with the most piety." [Sūrah al-Hujurāt:13]

So we have a precious opportunity in this noble month to prepare for our journey with the provision of piety and to graduate from the school of Ramadān as people who fear Allāh [تبارك وتعالى], who are accustomed to adhering to the obedience of Allaah and fulfilling his commands.

Verily, you are astonished with sheer amazement at many people when the month of Ramadān arrives they fill the Masājid and safeguard the prayers. Then when Ramadān departs, they forsake this or they forsake most it.

You find at certain times such as the Fajr prayer that the first row is not full. However, if you attend the Fajr prayer in the days of Ramadān you will find two or three rows.

Were these individuals dead and only came to life in Ramadān, were they traveling and they returned in the month of Ramadān, or what? Is it that they do not observe the Fajr prayer in congregation except in Ramadān? Where are they from observing this worship in all of the months [of the year]?

That is why we say that this is an opportunity for the one whom Allāh has honored and blessed to safeguard the prayer, and their soul has moved towards obedience and worship and they have tasted the sweetness of this month of Ramadān to continue upon this throughout their whole life.

So that they can benefit from this noble month and blessed season in order to actualize the meaning of this verse,

“Fasting has been prescribed for you like it was prescribed for those who came before you so that you may attain piety."

Perhaps you may fear Allāh [عزوجل] through the obedience you carry out and the worship you perform in this noble season.

Based upon this, Ramadān is a blessed and illustrious educational school where the pious believers graduate and in which the believers acquire the greatest provision, which continues with them for their entire life and all of their days.

Yet, many people do not benefit from this school - the school of Ramadān - as this distinguished period of time passes them by and they live during this term like a dull-witted student in his school who graduates but fails to benefit.

On the other hand the serious eager believer enters this blessed school and takes educational lessons of faith, which remain with him for his whole life.

What is the difference between sins and evil deeds

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SINS AND EVIL DEEDS

The Great Scholar Ibn al-Qayyim al-Jawzeeyah [رحمه الله] said:

❝Whereby the word 'sins' is mentioned in the Qur'aan then the intent by it is, the major sins.

Whereby the word 'bad deeds' then the intent by it is, the lesser sins.

When reflecting upon the Ayaat of the Noble Qur'aan we find:

The word 'forgiveness' [al-Maghfiratu] is presented with sins and the word 'at-Takfeer' [nullification] is presented with bad deeds.

Allaah [تعالى] said:

«Our Lord! Forgive us our sins and remit from us our evil deeds.»

This is because the word 'forgiveness' [al-Maghfiratu] includes prevention and protection and the word 'at-Takfeer' [nullification] includes concealment and removal.

The evidence that bad deeds are the lesser sins and what nullifies them is the saying of Allah [

«If you avoid the great sins which you are forbidden to do, We shall remit from you your [small] sins.»

Sins destroy relationships by Ibn Al-Qayyim rahimahullah

Sins destroy relationships |

follow up question

If sins destroy relationships, why do we find some sinners having good relationships despite their sinning?

ANSWER:

Ibnul Qayyim rahimahullah said:

“Concerning the people of sin and immorality, even if there is some form of affection and love between them, (inevitably) it turns to enmity and hatred, and most often this (outcome) is hastened for them in this world before the Hereafter. As for the Hereafter, then (Allah has said):

{الْأَخِلَّاءُ يَوْمَئِذٍ بَعْضُهُمْ لِبَعْضٍ عَدُوٌّ إِلَّا الْمُتَّقِينَ}

'Close friends, that Day, will be enemies to one another, except for the righteous.'
[Al-Zukhruf: 67].”

Some reciters (of Qur'an) taking lightly committing of some sins

Some reciters (of Qur'an) taking lightly committing of some sins, such as back-biting.

They may even commit bigger sins thinking that memorisation of the Qur'an would alleviate punishment.

They based this belief on the Prophet's

"If the Qur'an were put inside a container (i.e. memorised by man), it would never burn."*

This is from Iblis's deception of them. The punishment of a knowl-edgeable person (for committing sins) will be more severe than that of an unknowledgeable person because the added knowledge in-creases a person's liability.

The effects of sins by Ibn Al-Qayyim Jawziyah

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝗶𝗻𝘀 - 𝗜𝗯𝗻 𝗔𝗹-𝗤𝗮𝘆𝘆𝗶𝗺 𝗔𝗹-𝗝𝗮𝘄𝘇𝗶𝘆𝗮𝗵

Imam Ibn Al-Qayyim Al-Jawziyah explains to us the effects of sins in his book Al-Jawab Al-Kafi:

1) Prevention of knowledge: Knowledge is a light which Allah throws into the heart & disobedience extinguishes this light.

Imam Ash-Shafii said: “I complained to Wakee about the weakness of my memory, so he ordered me to abandon disobedience & informed me that knowledge is light. He said that the light of Allah is not given to the disobedient.”

2) Prevention of sustenance:

Just as righteousness brings about sustenance, the abandonment of righteousness causes poverty. There is nothing which can bring about sustenance like the abandonment of sins.

3) Prevention of obedience (to Allah): If there was no other punishment for sin except that it prevents one from obeying Allah then this would be sufficient.

4) Disobedience weakens the heart: The fact that it weakens the heart is clear. Disobedience continues to weaken the heart until its life ceases completely.

5) Disobedience reduces one’s lifespan and destroys any blessings: Just as righteousness increases one’s lifespan, sinning reduces it.

6) Living in sin: The servant continues to commit sins until they become very easy for him & seem insignificant in his heart and this is a sure sign of destruction. Every time a sin becomes insignificant in the sight of the servant it becomes great in the sight of Allah.

7) Disobedience brings humiliation and lowliness:Every aspect of honour lies in the obedience of Allah.

Ibn Al-Mubarak said: “I have seen sins kill the hearts. & humiliation is inherited by their continuity. The abandonment of sins gives life to the hearts. And the prevention of your soul is better for it.”

8) Disobedience corrupts the intellect: The intellect has light & disobedience extinguishes this light. When the light of the intellect is extinguished it becomes weak and deficient.

9) Sealing of the heart: When disobedience increases, the servant’s heart becomes sealed so that he becomes of those who are heedless.

Allah The Exalted said: [But no! A stain has been left on their hearts on account of what they used to earn (that is, their actions)] (Al-Mutaffifin 83: 14)

10) Sins cause various types of corruption to occur in the land:

Corruption of the water, the air, the plants, the fruit, and the dwelling places. The Exalted said: [Mischief has appeared on the land and the sea on account of what the hands of men have earned; that He may give them a taste of some of (the actions) they have done, in order that they may return] (Ar-Rum 30: 41)

11) Disappearance of modesty:
Modesty is the essence of the life of the heart and is the basis of every good. Its disappearance is the disappearance of all that is good. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:

“Modesty is goodness, all of it.”

12) Sins weaken and reduce the magnification of Allah the Almighty in the heart of the servant

13) Sins are the cause of Allah forgetting His servant:

Sinning also causes Allah to abandon him and leave him to fend for himself with his soul and his Satan and in this is destruction from which no deliverance can be hoped for.

14) Being removed from the realm of benevolence:

When a person’s sins, benevolence is removed from his heart. When benevolence fills the heart it prevents it from disobedience.

15) Disobedience causes the favours (of Allah) to cease & makes His revenge lawful:
No blessing ceases to reach a servant except because of a sin, and no retribution is made lawful upon him except because of a sin. Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) said:

“No trial has descended except due to a sin and it (the trial) is not repelled except by repentance.”
