Chapter: What has come concerning Ar-Ruqaa (Incantations) and Tamaa'im (amulets)

And in the Sahih from Abi Basheer Al-Ansaari may Allaah be pleased with him, that he was with the Messenger of Allaah ﷺ on some of his travels: "So he sent a messenger that there should not be a camel with a string necklace or necklace except that it be cut."

And from Ibn Mas'ood may Allaah be pleased with him, he said:

"I heard the Messenger of Allaah ﷺ say: "Verily Ar-Ruqaa and Tamaa'im and Tiwalah are Shirk."

[Reported by Ahmed and Abu Daawud]

"At-Tamaa'im": Something hung on the children to protect from the evil eye; but if what is worn is from the Qur'aan then some of the Salaf allowed this, and some of them didn't allow it, and made it from the prohibited, from them Ibn Mas'ood may Allaah be pleased with him.

And Ar-Ruqaa: Is what is called 'Azaa'im', and the evidence specifies from it what is free from Shirk, the Messenger of Allaah ﷺ allowed it for evil eye and fever.

And "At-Tiwalah": Is something they make and claim it makes a woman love her husband, and a man love his wife.

And from Abdullaah bin 'Akeem Marfoo':

"Whoever attaches something is left to depend on it."

[Reported by Ahmad and At-Tirmidhi]

And Ahmed relayed from Ruwayfi', he said:

The Messenger of Allaah ﷺ said to me: "O Ruwayfi', perhaps you will live for a long time, so inform the people that whoever knots his beard, or wears strings around his kneck, or cleans himself from urine or defecation with dung or bones then verily Muhammad is free from him."

And from Sa'eed bin Jubayr, he said:

"Whoever cuts the Tamimah of a person, it's equal to freeing a slave."

[Reported by Wakee']

And he has from Ibraaheem, he said:

"They used to peohibit all Tamaa'im, whether it be from the Qur'aan or other than the Qur'aan."

In it are Masaa'il (topics):

The First: The explanation of Ar-Ruqaa and At-Tamaa'im.

The Second: The explanation of At-Tiwalah.

The Third: That all these three are from Shirk without exception.

The Fourth: That Ruqya with correct speech for evil eye and fever is not from that.

The Fifth: That if the Tamimah is from the Qur'aan then the scholars have differed over it: Is it from that or not?

The Sixth: That attaching strings around animals against evil eye is from that.

The Seventh: The severe threat upon the one who attaches a piece of string.

The Eighth: The virtue of the one who cuts a Tamimah from a person.

The Nineth: That the speech of Ibraaheem doesn't contradict what proceeded of differing, because the intent is the companions of Ibn Mas'ood.
