THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DEFENSIVE AND OFFENSIVE JIHĀD | Sheikh Fawzān ḥafidhahullāh
QUESTION: May Allāh reward you. Please clarify the difference between defensive and offensive Jihād?
ANSWER: Defensive Jihād is when the enemy besieges a Muslim land, in which case everyone who is able to fight Jihād must fight. Likewise, if someone is present when the battle begins, it is not permissible for them to flee from the battle. Rather, he has to fight. This is defensive Jihād.
As for offensive Jihād, then this relates to invasion; taking the fight to the disbelievers in their own lands - not in our lands. This is offensive Jihād.
Furthermore, defensive Jihād is an individual obligation for every Muslim who is capable, whereas offensive Jihād is a communal obligation; If enough people take it up, the sin is uplifted from the rest.
