Holding the Quran over a bride's head is Biddah

Holding the Quran over a bride's head is Biddah

Holding the Quran over a bride’s head as something that It would prevent evil eye is very common Biddah, an Innovation,

It is haram and It is sinful. Many people in some countries have the custom of holding the Qur’an over the head of the bride, when she walks towards the groom’s car.

The motive for this custom is that they believe that this action will ward off the evil eye and envy from the newlywed couple, and will be a means of bringing barakah (blessing) and ensuring a long and happy married life.

This action is an innovation (bid‘ah) and is akin to using amulets and charms containing verses from the Qur’an.Also, In Fatwa No. 10543 by Shaykh Ibn Baz (Rahimullah), who declared this ritual as Biddah, declaring the fact that it has nothing to do with Islam and it has not done by any Prophets or any Islamic personality in the past.

The Arabic word “Biddah” means Innovation, as in context in Islam, it means “Innovation in Islam”, it is introducing something new in Islam what the Prophet (SAW) or his companions (May Allah be pleased with them all) never practised. Introducing a Biddah in Islam is very strictly forbidden as it can lead one astray. There are several hadiths which forbid Biddah in Islam, I’ll quote here.

The Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) told us that: “Every innovation (Biddah in Islam) is going astray, and every going astray will be in the Fire.” Narrated by Muslim (867) and an-Nasaa’i (1578).

Prophet (Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Whoever Innovates or accommodates an Innovator, upon him is the curse of Allah, the angels and all of mankind.” (Sahih Al Bukhari)

Prophet (Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon bing said: “Whoever honours an Innovator, has aided in the destruction of Islam.” (Sahih Ibn Hibban)

Prophet (Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “...and most evil of their affairs is an Innovation, and every Innovation is an error.” (Sahih Muslim 867)

Prophet (Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Allah (The Exalted) has prevented repentance from every person of Innovation.” (Silsilat As Sahih)

Prophet (Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Whoever Introduces an Innovation which is acted upon, Will bear the burden of sins equivalent to all those who act upon it.” (Tirmidhi)

Prophet (SAW) repeatedly condemned Biddah in many hadiths, there are various hadiths that tell you Biddah can lead you straight into hellfire such as this Hadith:

Prophet (SAW) said “You must adhere to my Sunnah and the way of the Rightly-Guided Caliphs who come after me. Adhere to it and cling to it strongly, and beware of newly-invented matters, for every newly-invented matter is an innovation (bid’ah) and every innovation is a going astray.” Narrated by Abu Dawood (4607).

Also, Prophet (SAW) said:

“Whoever innovates something into this matter of ours which does not belong to it will have it rejected.” (Sahih Bukhari).

Prophet (Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “I am your predecessor at lake fount, and some men from among you will be brought to me, and I will hand them over some water, thereupon they will be pulled away from me by force, whereupon I will say: ‘My Lord, my companions!’ Then the Almighty will reply: ‘You do not know what they did after you left, they Introduced new things in the religion after you.” (Sahih Al Bukhari)

Prophet (SAW) said: “The best people are those of my generation, and those who came after them and those who come after them.” (Sahih Al Bukhari and Sahih Muslim) and Prophet (SAW) said: “I enjoin you follow my companions and than those who come after them and than those who come after them.” (Tirmidhi)

Biddah was also repeatedly forbidden by the Early Muslims as well.

Hudhayfah ibn Al-Yamaan, a sahaba, (R.A.) said: “Do not perform any act of worship that was not practised by the Companions of the Messenger of Allah” [Narrated by Ibn Battah in Al-Ibaanah].

Another great companion said, Abu ad-Darda’ (R.A.) said: “You will never be misguided so long as you follow the footsteps [of the Prophet (saw)].” [Ibn Battah in Al-Ibaanah],

Abdullah Ibn Umar (R.A.) said:

“People will continue to adhere to the correct way so long as they folow the footsteps [of the Prophet (SAW).” [Al-Laalkaa’i in Sharh Usool I’tiqaad Ahl as-Sunnah wal-Jamaa’ah].

Abdullah Ibn Umar (R.A.) said: “Every bid’ah is misguidance, even if people think it is good.” [Al-Laalkaa’i in Sharh Usool I’tiqaad Ahl as-Sunnah wal-Jamaa’ah].

Ayyoob as-Sakhtiyaani (Rahimullah). said:

“The more the innovator increases his efforts in innovation, the further away he becomes from Allah.” [Al-Bia’h Wan-Nahy ‘anha by Ibn Waddaah]

so we need to follow and only practise in religion what the prophet (SAW) and his companions practised and stay far away from Biddah in Islam, as Prophet (SAW) said: “The best speech is the book of Allah and the best guidance is of Muhammad (SAW).” (Sahih Al Bukhari). We need to take the guidance of Muhammad (SAW) and follow it, and hold firmly to the book of Allah and the Sunnah of Muhammad (SAW), as he (SAW) said: “I have left among you two matters which will never lead you astray as long as you hold to them: the Book of Allah and the tradition (sunnah) of His Prophet.” (Al Muwatta 1661). We need to follow Muhammad (SAW) in everything as the Sahaba did, Abu Bakr (R.A.) said: “I am not going to leave anything that the Messenger of Allah (SAW) used to do but I will do it too, because I am afraid that if I leave anything that he used to do, I will go astray.” [Sahihh Muslim, 1759].

So, to sum it all up, introducing anything new in Islam what the Prophet (SAW) or his companions (May Allah be pleased with them all) never practised in Islam, is Biddah, it is a grave sin, May Allah (S.W.T.) protect us from it and holding a Quran over the bride’s head is a Biddah and It’s haram, may Allah (S.W.T.) protect us from Biddah. Ameen.
