Snooping on spouse’s phone in Islam
Do not snoop on your spouse’s phone.
This goes against Allah’s command:
وَلاَ تَجَسَّسوا (Do not spy) (49:12)
Tafseer: ‘Do not grope after the secrets of the people: do not search for their defects and weaknesses: do not pry into their conditions and affairs. Whether this is done because of suspicion, or for causing harm to somebody with an evil intention, or for satisfying one’s own curiosity, it is forbidden by the Shariah in every case.’
The only exception is in rare and special situations such as when there is real and actual behaviour that will truly and clearly harm the family, of a crime or true harm to others if nothing is done. But to do it based on ‘suspicion’ from one’s own insecurities, mere jealousy or paranoia becomes a form of ‘control’ as a husband or wife on the other spouse. It was a ‘contract of marriage’ not a ‘contract of ownership’ of the other person. These are the actions which break the ‘trust’ between spouses and the ‘peace’ and ‘tranquility’ that is supposed to exist in a marriage. In Islam certain rights of personal boundaries and privacy between the husband and wife are still maintained.
