The most common word for the place of prayer in Islam is masjid — which means “place of prostration.” This is remarkable because it captures an act, rather than a structure.
For the Muslim, therefore, the place of worship is not defined by walls and ceilings, it's not a structure or a work of architecture, it's a bowing, it's that act of spiritually humbling oneself.
It's not the grandeur of concrete, of impressive icons, of pillars and frescoes and stained glass, but rather the surrender of the soul before God as one's forehead touches the earth, the dust, the grass, or the earthen softness of one's simple prayer carpet.
