Bitesize Tafsir: Surah Al-Nisa Verse 32 on Envy and Dua
In surah al-Nisa', Allah instructs the believers by saying:
And wish not for the things in which Allah has made some of you to excel others. For men is a share of what they have earned, and for women is a share of what they have earned. And ask Allah of His bounty. Surely, Allah is Ever All-Knower of everything. [32]
Regarding this last phrase, ibn Kathir wrote:
Meaning: Allah is All-Knowing of who deserves worldly things so He gives them to them and who deserves poverty so He impoverishes them. And He is All-Knowing of who deserves a good hereafter so He enables him to do the deeds that lead to that and who deserves humiliation so deprives him of goodness and the factors which inculcate it.
Ibn Mas'ood relayed that Allah's Messenger said, "Ask Allah for His bounty, for Allah loves to be asked and the best form of worship is eagerly awaiting the answer to one's prayers." This was relayed by al-Tirmidhi.
[Tafsir ibn Kathir 2/287-288, as found in Tawfiq al-Rahman 1/261-262]
