PROPHET: HUD (عليه السلام)

PART: 1

THE LINEAGE

He is Hud bin Shelah bin Arphaxad bin Shem bin Noah عليه السلام. It is also said that Hud was Eber bin Shelah bin Arphaxad bin Shem. Ibn Jarir mentioned this.

HIS TRIBE AAD

His tribe was known as Aad, who were Arabs; they lived in the desert, in Yemen, in the mountains between Oman and Hadramout near the sea. Their dwelling place was known as Ash-Shahr, and the valley in which they lived was known as Mughith. They lived in huge tents with large pillars.

 Allah said in the Qur’an:

“Have you not seen how your Lord dealt with Aad; of the (city of) Iram, with lofty pillars: the like of which was never created in any land.” (Al-Fajr 89:6-8)

It is narrated from Abu Dhar in a long Hadith about the Prophets and Messengers that the Prophet ﷺ said: “… Four of them were Arabs: Hud, Salih, Shu’aib and your Prophet, O Abu Dahr!” (Sahih Ibn Hibban)

THE FIRST MAN TO SPEAK ARABIC

It is said that Hud was the first man to speak Arabic.

Those Arabs who lived before Ishmael are called ‘Arab Aribah’ the original or Pure Arabs, and they were Aad, Thamud, Jurhum, Tasm, Jadis, Umaim, Madyan, Imlaq, Jasim, Qahtan, Banu Yaqtan and others.

Those who are called ‘Arab Musta’ribah’ – those who assimilated themselves by means of marriage, come from the lineage of Ishmael, the son of Abraham. Ishmael was the first to speak eloquent and literary Arabic. He learnt the Arab literature from the tribe of Jurhum, who happened to stay in Haram with him and his mother Hagar. He, however spoke better Arabic than them, and similarly our Prophet ﷺ used to speak Arabic eloquently.

AAD AND IDOLATRY

Aad were the first people to worship idols after the Flood. They had three idols: SAMD, SAMUD and HARA.

Allah sent Hud as a Prophet to them, so he called them to (worship and believe in) Allah. He said in surat Al-A’raf: “And to Aad (We sent) their brother Hud, he said: “O my people! Worship Allah, you have no other God than Him. Will you not fear Him? The chiefs of those who disbelieved from his people said: ‘Most surely we regard you of unsound mind (i.e. foolish) and we think you are a liar.’” (7:65-66).

They said that we regard the beliefs you are inviting us to as foolishness, comparing to the beliefs that we are practicing  the idol worshipping from whom we seek our provisions and our help. That is why we see you as a liar in your claim of being a Messenger of God.
