Is It Permissible for Muslim Students to Wear Graduation Robe

The Islamic ruling on graduation robe for Muslim students

Q 34: There is a custom in American universities that students wear a graduation robe on their graduation day, which is similar to the Arabian gown, and a cap. It is said that such clothes were used by monks in the past. Based on this, is it permissible for a Muslim student to wear this robe in the graduation ceremony?

A: It is not permissible for a student to wear this robe, if it is one of the clothes related to non-Muslims. The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said, "Anyone who imitates a group of people is one of them." The prohibition is confirmed if it is proven that such clothes were used by monks.
