KHAWLAH bint Tha'labah, the first few verses of Surah al-Mujadilah were sent down concerning her situation.
A'ishah said,
"Blessed is the One Whose hearing encompasses all things.
I heard some of the words of Khawlah bint Tha'labah but some of her words were not clear to me when she complained to the Messenger of Allah about her husband (Aws bin as-Samit) and said,
'O Messenger of Allah, he has consumed my youth and I split my belly for him (i.e., I bore him many children), but when I grew old and could no longer bear children, he declared me to be like his mother's back.
O Allah, I complain to You.'
She continued to complain until Jibril brought down these verses:
"Indeed, Allah has heard the statement of her that disputes with you (O Muhammad) concerning her husband, and complains to Allah.
And Allah hears both.
Verily, Allah is the argument between you All-Hearer, All-Seer.
Those among you who make their wives unlawful to them by saying to them, "You are like my mother's back" (az-zihar).
They cannot be their mothers.
None can be their mothers except those who gave birth to them.
And verily, they utter an ill word and a lie. And verily, Allah is Oft-Pardoning, Oft-Forgiving."
[Surah al-Mujadilah 58:1-2]
