WHAT TO SAY WHEN SEEING A PERSON AFFLICTED IN HIS BODY OR RELIGION
Abu Hurayrah (May ALLĀH be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of ALLĀH ﷺ said:
“Whoever sees an afflicted person then says:
اَلْحَمْدُ لِلّٰهِ الَّذِيْ عَافَانِيْ مِمَّا ابْتَلاَكَ بِهِ، وَفَضَّلَنِيْ عَلَى كَثِيْرٍ مِّمَّنْ خَلَقَ تَفْضِيْلًا
‘All praise is due to ALLĀH Who has saved me from that which HE has afflicted you with and blessed me greatly over many of those whom HE has created’
'Alhamdu lillaahil-lathee 'aafaanee mimmab-talaaka bihi wa fadhdhalanee 'alaa katheerin mimman khalaqa tafdheela.'
shall not be struck by that affliction.”
{At-Tirmithi #3432}
NOTES:
1 The dua should be said when seeing a person with a bodily affliction (illness, disability etc.) or religious related affliction such as wrongdoing, oppression, innovation, disbelief and other than it.
2 It should be said in a low voice when seeing a person with a bodily affliction so as to not upset them.
3 The person afflicted in his religion (sins, innovation etc.) should be made to hear it if one wishes to rebuke him and it is hoped that he will rectify himself. However, if it is feared that it may cause harm or a greater evil then it should be said in a low voice.
