The Prophet's Upholding of Truth: A Celestial Lesson
When Ibrahim the son of the Prophet Muhammad (s) died, the Sun was eclipsed. So the people said, “The Sun has eclipsed due to the loss of the son of the Messenger of Allah!”
So the Prophet ascended the pulpit and said: “O people! Surely, the Sun and the Moon are two signs of Allah - they abide by His command and they are obedient to Him. They do not eclipse due to the death or living of anyone. So when they have eclipsed, then pray.”
Then he descended and he prayed the prayer of the eclipse with the people.
I always found this event to be a proof for his honesty. The companions thought that the eclipse was a miracle that occurred due to his son’s death. He could have accepted their hysteria and used it to prop himself up.
However, the Prophet denied this, and confirmed that celestial bodies are on their own course, regardless of human joy or tragedy.
