The Character of a Salafi: What It Means to Be a True Follower of the Prophet ﷺ

The Character The Salafi Should Possess

It is reported that ‘Umayr Ibn Ishaaq, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said:

“I saw from the companions of the Messenger of Allaah ﷺ more than I had not seen of them, and I have never seen people greater in softness than them, and I have never seen people less in harshness than them.”

[Sunan Ad-Daarimee, 1/63]

The character that a Salafi should possess is the same character that the companions of the Prophet ﷺ had. 

They were people of great softness and gentleness, and they were also people of great strength and determination. They were balanced in their character, and they were not extreme in any way.

Some of the specific qualities that a Salafi should possess include:

Love for Allāh and His Messenger ﷺ. This is the foundation of all good character. When a person loves Allāh and His Messenger ﷺ, they will naturally be motivated to obey Him and follow His example.

Knowledge of the Deen. A Salafi should have a sound understanding of the Islamic faith, including its beliefs, practices, and laws. This knowledge will help them to make sound decisions and to live their lives in accordance with the teachings of Islam.

Piety and Taqwa. A Salafi should be a pious and God-fearing person. They should strive to obey Allāh in all aspects of their lives, and they should avoid all forms of disobedience.

Humility and Meekness. A Salafi should be humble and meek. They should not boast about their knowledge or piety, and they should be willing to learn from others.

Forbearance and Patience. A Salafi should be patient and forbearing. They should not be quick to anger, and they should be willing to forgive those who wrong them.

Kindness and Compassion. A Salafi should be kind and compassionate to others. They should treat everyone with respect, regardless of their race, religion, or social status.

Courage and Determination. A Salafi should be courageous and determined. They should not be afraid to stand up for what they believe in, even if it means facing opposition.

These are just some of the qualities that a Salafi should possess. By striving to develop these qualities, a person can become a true follower of the Prophet ﷺ and a beacon of light in the world.

In addition to the qualities mentioned above, a Salafi should also be characterized by:

Adherence to the Quran and Sunnah. A Salafi should follow the Quran and Sunnah in all aspects of their life, and they should avoid any innovations or deviations from the teachings of Islam.

Love for the Salaf. A Salafi should love and respect the Salaf, who were the first three generations of Muslims. They should learn from their example and strive to emulate their character.

Avoidance of extremism. A Salafi should avoid extremism in all its forms. They should be moderate and balanced in their approach to Islam, and they should avoid following any misguided groups or individuals.

Dawah and education. A Salafi should strive to spread the message of Islam and to educate others about the true teachings of the Quran and Sunnah. They should be patient and kind in their dawah, and they should avoid being harsh or judgmental.

The character of a Salafi is a reflection of their love for Allāh and His Messenger ﷺ. By striving to develop the qualities mentioned above, a person can become a true Salafi and a blessing to the world.

Saying “I am Salafi” by  Sheikh Al-Albanī

Q: Some of the Du‘āt say: “I refuse to say that I am salafi out of fear that people will think I am a Hizbi.” Is this statement correct or do I have to explain what Salafiyyah is to the people? 

A: A discussion took place between me and an Islamic writer who is with us upon the Qur’ān and Sunnah. I ask our brothers from the students of knowledge to memorise this discussion as it has an important benefit. 

I told him: “If someone asks you “What is your Madhab (viewpoint)?” What would your answer be?”

He said: Muslim 

I said: “This answer is wrong”

He said: “Why?”

I said: “If someone asks you “What is your religion?” What would your answer be?” 

He said: Muslim 

I then said: “At first, I didn’t ask you what your religion is, I asked you what your madhab is. And you know that in the Islamic lands today there are a lot of different madhabs. You are with us in declaring that some of them have left the fold of Islam, like the “Durooz” and the “Ismā‘īliyyah” and the “‘Alawiyyah” and other similar groups. And yet, those groups still say “We are Muslims”. And there are other groups which we do not say that they have left the fold of Islām, but there is no doubt that they are from the deviant groups that went past the Qur‘ān and Sunnah in a lot of issues; like the “Khawarij”, the “Mu‘tazilah”, the “Murji’ah, the “Jabriyyah” and other similar groups. What is your opinion, is this not present in this day and age?” 

He said: “Yes” 

I said: “So if a person from one of these groups asks us “What is your madhab?” He will reply with your answer. “Muslim” is a reserved answer. As he is a Muslim and so are you. So we want you to clarify in your answer, what is your madhab after your religion?” 

He said: “Then my madhab is the Qur’ān and the Sunnah” 

I said: “Again this answer is not enough”

He said: “Why?” 

I said: “Because the groups that we have mentioned all say that they are Muslim. And none of them says “I am not upon the Qur’ān and Sunnah” For example, do the “Shi‘ah” say we are against the Qur’an and Sunnah Rather they say “We are upon the Qur’ān and Sunnah and you have deviated from the Qur‘ān and Sunnah”. So it is not enough to say that you are a Muslim upon the Qur’ān and Sunnah, there has to be another enclosed description. Is it permissible for us to understand the Qur’ān and Sunnah by adopting a new method of understanding, or do we stick to the understanding of the pious predecessors (Salaf As-Sālih)? 

He said: “Absolutely”

I said: “Do you believe that the people of the other madhabs-who have left the fold of Islām, and claim to be Muslim, and from the groups who have not left the fold of Islām but have deviated from some of its rulings- Do you believe that they say like you and I?- “We are upon the Qur’ān and Sunnah according to the methodology of the Salaf As-Sālih? 

He said: “No they do not associate with us in that”

I said: “Then it is not enough for you to say I am upon the Qur’ān and Sunnah. There has to be another enclosed description.” 

He said: “Yes”

I said: “Therefore you will say, upon the Qur’ān and Sunnah according to the understanding of the Salaf As-Sālih.” Then I told him, and he was an author and a poet “Is there a single word in the Arabic language that summarises this statement “Muslim upon the Qur’ān and Sunnah according to the understanding of the Salaf As-Sālih” like the word “Salafi”?” 

He said: That’s the one 

So he was left with no choice but to agree. This is the answer. If someone censures you then tell him this. Ask him “What are you?” He will say “Muslim” and then from there carry on the fore-mentioned discussion with him.

My Advice to Ahlus-Sunnah; the Salafīs in America and Elsewhere by Shaykh Alī Al-Wasīfī

I advise them to contemplate upon the creation of the heavens and earth and to always reflect upon that which Allāh has produced and His universal signs. They are to contemplate the meanings of the Names, Attributes, and Actions of Allāh, but do not contemplate upon the Essence of Allāh, the Exalted; for they cannot fathom the true nature of His Essence. 

They should be abundant in seeking His forgiveness, glorifying Him, and remembering Allāh at all times with a remembrance in which the heart corresponds with the tongue and to be consistent in reciting a daily portion of the Noble Qur'ān, and to establish circles for memorization of the Qur’an within the mosques; seeking assistance in that with the Tafsīr of the Qur’an by Imām As-Sa'dī. 

And to study the Sīrah of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from Zad Al-Ma’ad by the Imam Ibnul-Qayyim; and to study the explanation of Jami’ Al-‘Ulu wal-Hikam by Ibn Rajab Al-Handbali. Likewise, they should study the book Usul As-Sunnah by Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal. 

They should also study the Sirah of the Salaf; Ahlul-Hadīth from the books of history, in order to make easy actualization of the practical application (of Islām) within their lives and objectives; (studying that) either from Siyar A'lām An-Nubalā' or from Al-Bidāyah wan-Nihayah, or from Tabaqāt Al-Hanābilah, or other than it from the books deemed reputable with Ahlul-Hadīth. 

I advise them to give importance to spreading translations (of the meanings of) the Qur’an to non-Arabs and to utilize the most suitable arguments with them.

*I advise them to be close (to one another), be united, to pardon each other, and to mutually advise each other with the truth, along with patience; especially when tribulations are abundant.* And to not involve laymen in Fitan and that which is above their mental capacity, and to not delve into higher level sciences without Fiqh (of those sciences) and without a Shaykh (to oversee you in those matters). 

And to focus on lofty matters, leaving off lowly affairs, and Allāh, Alone, is the Granter of Success and to Him belongs the Bounty and Favor

The meaning of Al-Salafiyah

The second question of Fatwa no. 1361

Q 2: What is “Al-Salafiyah”? What do you think of it?

A: Al-Salafiyah (Salafism) is a term derived from the word “Salaf”, which refers to the righteous predecessors of the first three generations of Muslims which include the Sahabah (Companions of the Prophet), Tabi‘un (Followers, the generation after the Companions of the Prophet) and Tabi‘ Al-Tabi‘un (Successors, the generation after the Tabi‘un). The Messenger of Allah attested to their righteousness when he said: “The best of people are my generation (or my century), then those who come after them, then those who come after them. Then there will come a people whose testimony will precede their oath and their oath will precede their testimony.” Narrated by Al-Bukhari, Muslim and Imam Ahmad in his Musnad.

The word “Salafiyun” (Salafis) is the plural of “Salafi”, derived from “Salaf” that has the above-mentioned meaning. It refers to those following the way of the Salaf (righteous predecessors) of the early Muslim generation in their adherence to the Qur‘an and the Sunnah and calling people to believe and act upon them, and thereby became known as “Ahl-ul-Sunnah wal-Jama'ah.”
