Shuyukh often say, Sisters, you are under no religious obligation to cook and clean

Shuyukh often say “Sisters, you are under no religious obligation to cook and clean for your husband! You can even get your husband to hire a maid!”

But shuyukh rarely say “Brother, you are under no religious obligation to take your wife to restaurants, vacations; or buy them a diamond ring; or provide them a car!”

If we only went by “religious obligations” in marriage, we would have very little to work with. In marriage, there should be love and mercy, which entails doing more than the bare-minimum. Legal contracts are not romantic — they are there in the case where there is no love. But when there is love, there is a genuine desire to bring joy to your partner.

Yes, things that are not laws set in stone should be negotiated. Some men LOVE doing the house duties, some women hate materialism, that is well and fine. It’s just the rhetoric that is unbalanced.

People want to dispel the idea that Islam oppresses women, great; but in doing so, we’ve created a 1-sided conversation about a lifelong 2-sided commitment.
