Speech is a unique gift that humans have been endowed with,
and it should be sufficiently used to remind oneself and others of Allah.
In the Islamic tradition, this can be done through tasbīḥ (praising, glorifying, and exalting God), supplication, prayer, and mentioning Allah in everyday encounters.
Dr. Timothy Winter once wrote, “Faith may be measured by the number of verses that soften one’s heart.”
The mention of Allah, the creator of life and death, should harken one to their purpose in this world.
Obsessing over entertainment and pleasure takes us away from the fundamental questions of life: where we come from, why we are here, and where we are going. Frivolity numbs us to our purpose in this world. Pronouncing the many names of our Sustainer should remind us of our vital responsibilities and our finite time on this planet. It should break the spell that worldliness has on us.
