RAMADĀN PREPARATION SERIES PART 3

RAMADĀN PREPARATION SERIES

Part 3: Start Offering Night Prayers Now!

Praying qiyām in Ramadān is one of the greatest acts of worship by means of which a person draws closer to his Lord. Ibn Rajab رحمه الله mentioned: “Note that in the month of Ramadān the believer engages in jihad al-nafs on two fronts: during the day by fasting and during the night by praying qiyām. Whoever combines these two types of jihad will be given reward without limit.” {Lataif al-Ma'arif 1/171}

The Messenger of ALLĀH ﷺ said: “Whoever prays qiyām in Ramadān out of faith and in the hope of reward, his previous sins will be forgiven.” {Bukhari and Muslim}

But I’m sure you’ve noticed how things change throughout the month.

Usually, when Ramadān starts, there are a lot of people showing up at the mosque for Tarawīh. By the second week, that number has gone down by two-thirds. Then it shoots back up again during the last ten days or the last seven.

Don’t get caught in the same rut again. If you get into the habit of making qiyāmu-layl now regularly, you’ll be better equipped for these long prayers when Ramadān comes.

Just a few tips on making Qiyamu-layl:

• Ask ALLAH ﷻ to help you wake up for night prayers, and make a sincere intention to do so before you go to bed.

• Avoid consuming heavy meals a few hours before bedtime as they can interfere with your sleep and make it difficult to wake up.

• Sleep Early

• Take a short nap during the day.

• Find someone who also wants to wake up for night prayers and motivate each other.

• Start slowly! Don’t start off making 20 raka'at and wear yourself out after a couple of days. Do what is easy for you, even if that is only two rakah. Starting this new habit with two rakʿah is a manageable keystone habit.

The Messenger of ALLĀH (ﷺ) said, “Take up good deeds only as much as you are able, for the best deeds are those done regularly even if they are few.” {Ibn Ma‌jah 4240}

In conclusion, qiyam-layl serve as a powerful tool for preparing for Ramadān, as they allow the servant to deepen his spiritual connection to ALLĀH, reflect on his life, and seek forgiveness. They are an important aspect of Ramadān preparation, helping to set the tone for the month ahead and establish a mindset of devotion and reflection.

We ask ALLĀH ﷻ to help us remember HIM, thank HIM, and worship HIM properly, آمِيْن يَارَبَّ الْعَالَمِين
