RAMADĀN PREPARATION SERIES
Part 2: Superiority of The Month of Ramadān Over Other Months
The month of Ramadān is the most blessed month of the Islamic calendar in which ALLĀH guides us to good deeds, as Ibn Qayyim Al-Jawziyya (رحمه الله) mentioned,
“An example of the differentiation between the things that ALLĀH has created – is the fact that the month of Ramadān is superior to all other months, and the last ten nights are superior to all other nights.” [Zaad Al-Ma‘aad]
The month of Ramadān is superior to others for the following reasons:
• In it there is the best night of the year, which is Laylat al-Qadr.
ALLĀH says: “Verily, We have sent it (this Qur’ān) down in the Night of Al‑Qadr. And what will make you know what the Night of Al‑Qadr is? THE NIGHT OF AL ‑QADR IS BETTER THAN A THOUSAND MONTHS. The Angels and Jibrael descends in it by the permission of their Lord for every affair, Peace (and goodness from ALLĀH to HIS believing slaves) until the appearance of dawn” [Suratul-Qadar 97:1-5]
So worshipping ALLĀH on a certain night in the month of Ramada+ān is better than worshipping HIM a thousand months (83 years and 4 months)
• In the month of Ramadān was revealed the best of Books to the best of the Prophets (صلى الله عليه وسلم).
ALLĀH says: “The month of Ramadān in which was revealed the Qur’ān, a guidance for mankind and clear proofs for the guidance and the criterion (between right and wrong)” [Suratul-Baqarah 2:185]
• In the month of Ramadān the gates of Paradise are opened and the gates of Hell are shut, and the devils are chained up.
The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said,
"When the first night of the month of Ramadān comes, the devils and rebellious jinn are chained up and the gates of Hell are closed, and not one gate of it is opened. The gates of Paradise are opened and not one gate of it is closed. And a caller cries out: ‘O seeker of good, proceed; O seeker of evil, desist. And ALLĀH has those whom HE redeems from the Fire, and that happens every night.” [Tirmidhi & Ibn Majah]
Sheikh Salīh al-Fawzān حفظه الله said: “This hadith is evidence for the virtue of the month of Ramadān and the greatness of its special qualities. ALLĀH, the Most High, favored it over all other months, and singled it out with characteristics that are not found in other than it; making it a reason to perform righteous actions, kindness and goodness.” [Read on page 24: Ahadith about Fasting, Rulings, and Manners]
Besides all these, there are many kinds of worship in Ramadān, some of which the human soul does not strive for as much as during the month of Ramadān, such as fasting, praying qiyaam, feeding the poor, i’tikaaf, sadaqah, reading Qur’ān and so on.
We invoke ALLĀH to enable us to reach the blessed month of Ramadān.
