A SUMMARIZED DESCRIPTION OF THE PRAYER, FASTING, NIGHT PRAYER & ITI'KAAF OF THE PROPHET (ﷺ)

EPISODE 4 - Description of the Prayer of the Prophet (ﷺ)

 Sujood (Prostration)

➖➖➖

Abu Ishaq narrated:

"I said to Al-Bara bin Azib: 'Where would the Prophet place his face when he prostrated?' He said: 'Between his hands.'"

(Jami at-Tirmidhi 271)

Abu Hurairah narrated that :

the Prophet said; "Is it that one of you intends to kneel in his Salat with the kneeling of the camel?"

 (Jami at-Tirmidhi 269)

Sujud (prostration)

Then he should say “Allahu akbar” – this is obligatory.

He should raise his hands sometimes.

Going down on the hands

Then he should go down into sujud on his hands, putting them down before the knees. This is what was commanded by the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and it is proven that he did this, and he forbade imitating the manner in which a camel sits down, which is by kneeling with its forelegs first.

When he prostrates – which is an essential part of the prayer – he should put his weight on his palms and spread them out.

The prostration must be performed on “seven limbs”; the forehead and nose, both hands, both knees, and both feet, whilst separating the thighs without letting the stomach rest on any part of it (i.e. the thighs) (Bukhari, 812; Muslim, 490) and joining the fingers and directing them towards the Qiblah whilst saying:

سُبْحَانَ رَبِّي الأعلى

“Glory is to my Lord, the Most High,” three times, and if it is increased to ten then that is good.

(Ahmad, Abu Dawood, Ibn Maajah, Daaraqutni, Tahaawi, Bazzaar, Tabaraani in Mu`jam al-Kabeer)

Prostration is the greatest position for making supplications.

(Muslim, 482)

Sitting Between The Two Prostrations

➖➖➖

Thereafter, he goes into the sitting position, which is in-between the two prostrations. It is Sunnah to sit in the Iftirash position, which is to place the right foot in an upright position whilst directing the toes towards the Qiblah and spreading out the left foot in a way that makes it easy to sit on. A person can also sit on both heels with both feet in the upright position. This position is called the Al-Iqaa’i position.

(an-Nasaa’i 1158; Abu Dawood: 988)

Between the two prostrations he says the following:

رَبِّ اغْفِرْ لِي

“My Lord, forgive me.” Twice.

(Abu Dawood 1/231; Ibn Maajah 1/148; an-Nasaa’i 1145)

Thereafter, the second prostration is the same as the first and the second unit of prayer is the same as the first. The only difference is that the opening supplication is not mentioned in the second unit and the recitation in the second unit is half (in length) in comparison to the first unit.
