Sahabiyat ❥ (first generation):
SAWDAH BINT ZAM'AH (رضي الله عنها)

The Mother of the Believers Sawdah bint Zam'ah bin Qays al-Qurashiyyah al-'Amiriyyah.

She was the first woman the Messenger of Allah ﷺ married after Khadijah.
He was only married to her for three years or more before he consummated his marriage with A'ishah.
She was a noble, honorable woman with firm resolve.

Sawdah was previously married to as-Sakran bin 'Amr, the brother of Suhayl bin 'Amr.
She gave her days to 'A'ishah, showing concern for the heart of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.

[Shaykh Muhammad bin Abdil-Wahhab al-'Aqil said, "As for Sawdah:
her choosing to remain with the Prophet shows her intelligence, wanted to be raised on the Day of Judgment from amongst his wives."]

A'ishah said:
I never saw a woman and wanted to be in her skin (wanted to be her) other than Sawdah bint Zam'ah, she was a woman with firm resolve.
When she became older, she gave her days with the Prophet ﷺ to 'A'ishah.
[ Sahih Muslim 1463 : translation based upon the explanstion of Imam an Nawawi.]

Ibn Sa'd said,
"Sawdah and her husband (as-Sakran bin Amr) accepted Islam and migrated to Abyssinia."

As-Sakran bin Amr returned to Makkah, where he died, leaving Sawdah a widow.
The Prophet ﷺ proposed to her.
She said, "My affair is up to you."
He told her to have a man from her family marry them, so she told Hatib bin Amr al-'Amiri to marry her off.
Hatib is from those who migrated and participated in Badr.

Sawdah bint Zam'ah used to make the Messenger of Allah ﷺ laugh.

Sawdah said to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ:

صَلَّيْتُ خَلْفَكَ الْبَارِحَةَ فَرَكَعْتَ بِي حَتَّى أَمْسَكْتُ بِأَنْفِي مَخَافَةَ أَنْ يَقْطُرَ الدَّمُ قَالَ:
فَضَحِكَ وَكَانَتْ تُضْحِكُهُ الْأَحْيَانَ بِالشَّيْء.

"I prayed behind you last night, so I bowed until I had to hold my nose fearing blood would drip."
Thus, he laughed.
And she would make him laugh from time to time with poetry.

[The laughing of the Messenger of Allah was a smile, as 'A'ishah said,
"I have never seen the Messenger of Allah laughing so heartily that his uvula could be seen.
He used to smile only."
Collected by al-Bukhari and Muslim.]

A'ishah said:
Sawdah sought permission on the night of Muzdalifah to leave before it became too crowded, because she was a heavy woman, and he gave her permission.
[Sahih Muslim 1290]

Sawdah bint Zam'ah was a charitable woman.

Ibn Sirin narrated that after the death of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ Umar bin al-Khattab sent Sawdah a sack containing dirham.
She said, "What is this?"
They said, "Money."
She said, "Money in a sack disguised as dates?"
So she said to a young girl, "Give me contentment."
So the young girl gave all the money to the poor.

Ahadith:
She narrated ahadith, some of which have been collected in Sahih al-Bukhari.
Ibn 'Abbas and Yahya bin 'Abdillah al-Ansari narrated from her.

Sawdah narrated five ahadith which are collected in Al-Bukhari and Muslim, and one which is only collected in Sahih al-Bukhari.

Abu Waqid al-Laythi said:
سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَقُولُ لِأَزْوَاجِهِ فِي حَجَّةِ الْوَدَاعِ هَذِهِ ثُمَّ ظُهُورُ الْحُصْر.

I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying to his wives during the Farewell Pilgrimage,
"This (is the pilgrimage for you) afterwards, stick to the surface of the mats (stay at home)."
[Sunan Abi Dawud 1722]

Sawdah bint Zam'ah said:
حَجَجْتُ وَاعْتَمَرْتُ ، فَأَنَا أَقَرُّ فِي بَيْنِي كَمَا أَمَرَنِي اللهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ. فِي

I performed Hajj and Umrah, so I remain in my home as I have been commanded to do by Allah the Exalted.

Sawdah bint Zam'ah had two brothers:

Malik bin Zam'ah and 'Abd bin Zam'ah.
As for Malik bin Zam'ah, he was from the first and foremost to accept Islam.
He migrated to Abyssinia during the second migration, then he returned to Madinah with Ja'far bin Abi Talib, and then he passed away.

As for her brother 'Abd bin Zam'ah, he was not Muslim at the time Sawdah married the Messenger of Allahﷺ, so he began to throw dirt on his head in anguish over his sister's marriage.
When he accepted Islam, he wrote a poem saying, "Verily, I was foolish the day I threw dirt upon my head because the Messenger of Allah ﷺ married Sawdah."

Her brother 'Abd bin Zam'ah is also mentioned in the hadith concerning the child of the bed.

Her Death:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ married Sawdah during the month of Ramadan 10 years after he became a prophet.
He migrated with her to Madinah.
She died in Madinah during the month of Shawwal.

Al-Waqidi noted,
"Sawdah died in Madinah in Shawwal in 54 AH."
While Sa'id bin Abi Hilal said,
"Sawdah died during 'Umar's caliphate."
