The biography of THUWAYBAH

THUWAYBAH

Thuwaybah was the slave-girl of Abu Lahab, the uncle of the Prophet ﷺ.

She breastfed the Prophet ﷺ, along with his uncle Hamzah and Abu Salamah Abdullah bin 'Abdil-Asad al-Makhzumi.

Thuwaybah was the first to breastfeed the Prophet ﷺ.

She suckled him a few days before Halimah suckled him.

She suckled him from the milk of her son Masruh.

Umm Habibah said:

"O Messenger of Allah, marry my sister, the daughter of Abu Sufyan."

The Prophet ﷺ said, "Would you like that?"

I replied, “Yes, for even now I am not your only wife, and I like that my sister should share the good with me."

The Prophet ﷺ said, "But that is not lawful for me."

I said, "We have heard that you want to marry the daughter of Abu Salamah."

He said, "(You mean) the daughter of Umm Salamah?"

I said, "Yes." He said, "Even if she were not my step-daughter, she would be unlawful for me to marry as she is my foster niece.

Abu Salamah and I were suckled by Thuwaybah.

So you should not present to me your daughters or your sisters (in marriage)."

'Urwah commented on this narration: "Thuwaybah was the freed slave-girl of Abu Lahab whom he had manumitted, and then she suckled the Prophet ﷺ.

When Abu Lahab died, one of his relatives saw him in a dream in a very bad state and asked him, 'What have you encountered?'

Abu Lahab said, 'I have not found any rest since I left you, except that I have been given water to drink in this (the space between his thumb and other fingers), and that is because of my manumitting Thuwaybah.

Khadijah would honor her, and she attempted to purchase her freedom from Abu Lahab but he refused.

He eventually freed her during the year of migration.

The Prophet ﷺ would keep ties with her while he was in Makkah, and once he migrated to Madinah, he used to send her gifts until he was informed of her death.

She died in 7 AH.

Upon hearing this, the Prophet ﷺ said,

"What happened to her son Masruh?"

They replied, "He died before her."

[Sahih al bukhari 5101]

End.
