Biography of the UMAMAH BINT ABIL-'AS (رضي الله عنها)
Umamah is the child that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ
would carry during his prayer.
She is the daughter of his daughter Zaynab.
Her Marriage:
She married Ali bin Abi Talib during 'Umar's caliphate, and she remained with him for a period of time and bore a child for him.
After 'Ali was killed, she married al-Mughirah bin Nawfal bin al-Harith al-Hashimi.
Her Death:
She died while married to him after she gave birth to their son Yahya bin al-Mughirah.
She died during the caliphate of Mu'awiyah bin Abi Sufyan.
Ahadith:
Abu Qatadah said:
أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم كَانَ يُصَلِّى وَهُوَ حَامِلٌ أَمَامَةً بِنْتَ زَيْنَبَ بِنْتِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم وَلايِي الْعَاصِ بْنِ الرَّبيع فَإِذَا قَامَ حَمَلَهَا وَإِذَا سَجَدَ وَضَعَهَا.
The Messenger of Allah was praying while he was holding Umamah, the daughter of Zaynab (the daughter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ), and she (Umamah) was the daughter of Abul-'As bin ar-Rabi'.
When he stood, he would hold her, and when he prostrated, he would put her down.
A'ishah said:
The Messenger of Allah was given a gift which contained a necklace from onyx, he said,
"I will surely give this to the most beloved family member to me.
"The women said, "It will daughter of Abu Quḥafah (Abu Bakr).
"So the Messenger of Allah called Umamah bint Zaynab and linked the necklace around her neck.
