EPISODE 4️⃣: DETRIMENTS OF SUPERSTITIONS TO OUR DEEN

Many ahaadeeth were reported from the Prophet (ﷺ) in which he forbade pessimism and superstitious belief in evil omens.

In one of the narrations, He (ﷺ) said: “Tiyarah (superstitious belief in omens) is shirk.”

(Al-Tirmidhi 1614).

Superstitious belief in omens is shirk in itself and the things it leads to. A person who believes in superstitions automatically denounces his tawakkul in Allaah (ﷻ).
He may take to wearing amulets, using charms or performing certain actions which he believes can bring him benefit and ward harm off him, and that is haraam.

The Messenger of Allaah (ﷺ) was heard saying: “Ruqyah (spells), amulets and love charms are shirk.”

(Abu Dawood 3883, classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh Abi Dawood)

Ibn al-Qayyim (رحمه الله) said:

"Whoever puts his trust in Allaah (ﷻ) and does not believe in omens and superstition, that does not affect him. They said: this is indicated by the hadeeth of Anas, ‘A bad omen only affects the one who believes in it.’ If a person believes in bad omens, Allaah may make that the cause of bad things happening to him, just as He may make trust in Him and making Him alone the focus of one's fear and hope one of the main causes of warding off evil that people may superstitiously expect."

If a person opens the door to superstition, the world will become a hard place for him and he will imagine that everything is a bad omen. This may lead to anxiety which strips people of their peace of mind and prevents them from focusing on their worship and daily activities.

The superstitious person attracts evil to himself, so the superstition affects him more, because he did not protect himself with belief in Allaah (ﷻ) alone and trust in Allaah (ﷻ). These are matters well known from real life. Everyone inevitably feels superstitious but the strong believer wards off those superstitious feelings by putting his trust in Allaah (ﷻ). Whoever puts his trust in Allaah (ﷻ), He will suffice him and he will have no need of anyone or anything else.

May Allāh (ﷻ) make us steadfast on the straight path.
