EPISODE 3️⃣: FORTUNE-TELLERS, SOOTHSAYERS, ASTROLOGERS AND MAGICIANS
➖➖➖
Seeking magicians, fortune tellers and soothsayers is a grave deed that is taken too lightly and is seen as a normal and common occurrence. It's a shame that Shaytaan has successfully led us away from the straight path while we keep making it easy for him to place obstacles in our paths.
A Muslim is not permitted to visit Soothsayers and fortune-tellers (i.e those who claim to have the knowledge of the unseen and the future). The worst are those who consult magicians, who in turn, use the help of the devils by the means of black magic, to harm a servant of Allāh (ﷻ).
Safiyya reported from some of the wives of Allāh's Apostle (رضي الله عنهم) , Allāh's Apostle (ﷺ) having said:
"He who visits a diviner ('Arraf) and asks him about anything, his prayers extending to forty nights will not be accepted."
(Sahih Muslim 2230)
The fortune-tellers receive inspiration from the devils among the Jinn, regardless of whether they perceive that or not.
On the authority of Aishah (رضي الله عنها) :
" Some people asked Allaah's Messenger (ﷺ) about the fore-tellers He said. 'They are nothing" They said, 'O Allaah's Messenger (ﷺ)! Sometimes they tell us of a thing which turns out to be true." Allaah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "A Jinn snatches that true word and pours it into the ear of his friend (the fore-teller) (as one puts something into a bottle), the foreteller then mixes with that word one hundred lies."
(Sahih al-Bukhari 5762)
This authentic narration clearly explains how the fortune-tellers receive their information, and why it is vague and mostly untrue.
However, most people in their naivety remember the one true statement in a hundred lies, and they develop a dangerous dependency on the soothsayers, who in turn, extract money from their clients. It is not uncommon in these times to see soothsayers ascribing themselves to Islam and displaying outward piety. They take advantage of unsuspecting Muslims who do not know the seriousness and dangers of this affair.
Therefore, a Muslim is required to know the Islamic belief and also know what opposes it. It is obligatory to adhere to the guidance of the Prophet (ﷺ) in staying away from those affairs that contradict one's faith in Allāh (ﷻ), the Majestic and Most High. No one knows the unseen or the future except Allāh (ﷻ) , just as He commanded His Prophet (ﷺ) to proclaim. Allāh (ﷻ) says:
Say, [O Muhammad], "I do not tell you that I have the depositories [containing the provision] of Allāh or that I know the unseen, nor do I tell you that I am an angel. I only follow what is revealed to me." Say, "Is the blind equivalent to the seeing? Then will you not give thought?"
(Al-An'am 6:50)
Fortune-tellers, sorcerers and soothsayers seek the help of the devils from amongst the Jinn to achieve their goals, and that is disbelief.
So avoid these people and their methods. Trust in Allāh (ﷻ) and seek His aid, and seek refuge with Him alone, and you will find your salvation and a way out of your difficulties.
May Allāh (ﷻ) make us steadfast on the straight path.
آمين يارب العالمين
