The Importance of Steadfastness: A Muslim's Guide to Strong Faith

THE MEANING OF WORSHIPPING ALLĀH AS IT WERE UPON THE EDGE

ALLĀH says,

And among people is he who worships ALLĀH as it were upon the edge.

That is, among people there are some who are weak in faith; faith has not truly entered their hearts and they have never felt the joy of faith. Rather they entered the religion either out of fear or by way of following a custom, and they cannot be steadfast when faced with trials and tribulations.

If good befalls him, he is content with it;

If provision continues to come easily, and they are not faced with any hardship, they are content with that life of ease, not with their faith. ALLĀH may give them well-being and not put them through trials which could cause them to give up their religion.

"but if a trial befalls him" such as being faced with hardship or the loss of someone or something dear to them

"he turns back on his face." that is, they apostatise and give up their religion.

He loses both this world and the Hereafter.

With regard to this world, this means that they do not get what they hope for by apostatising. The one who made his apostasy his capital, giving up his faith in return for something that he thought he would achieve, will find that his efforts were to no avail and he will not get anything but what is decreed for him. With regard to the hereafter, it is obvious. They will be deprived of paradise which is as vast as the heavens and the earth, and they will deserve hell.

"That is indeed manifest loss" that is, clear and obvious loss.

{Tafsi‌r As-Sa'di}

#sadi #Hajj (22:11)

Abu Hurayrah (may ALLĀH be pleased with him) narrated: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Let the slave of Dinar and Dirham, of Quantify and Khamisa perish as he is pleased if these things are given to him, and if not, he is displeased. Let such a person perish and relapse, and if he is pierced with a thorn, let him not find anyone to take it out for him." {Al-Bukhārī #2887}

Suhayb reported: The Messenger ofALLĀH (ﷺ) said: "How wonderful is the affair of the believer! Indeed, all of his affairs are good for him. This is not the case for anyone but the believer. If something good happens to him, he is grateful, which is good for him. And if something bad happens to him, he has patience, which is good for him." {Muslim #2999)
