Understanding Āyat Al-Ḥijāb: The Command of the Veil
This is Āyat Al-ḤijābSheikh Najeeb Ash-Shar'abi ḥafidhahullāh said:
"After the Prophet ﷺ married Zainab, Allah Almighty revealed Āyatul Ḥijāb. Anas, may Allah be pleased with him, said: "I went to enter, but the veil was placed between me and him, as Allah Almighty revealed (interpreted meaning) {O you who believe, do not enter the houses of the Prophet except when you are permitted for a meal, without awaiting its readiness. But when you are invited, then enter; and when you have eaten, disperse without seeking to remain for conversation. Indeed, that [behavior] was troubling the Prophet, and he is shy of [dismissing] you. But Allah is not shy of the truth. And when you ask [his wives] for something, ask them from behind a partition}." This is the Āyah of Ḥijāb: {And when you ask [his wives] for something, ask them from behind a partition}. When it is said, "Āyatul Ḥijab," this is what is intended. Some people think that Āyātul Ḥijāb is the Āyah in Surah Al-Aḥzāb where Allah Almighty says (interpreted meaning) {O Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to bring down over themselves [part] of their outer garments. That is more suitable that they will be known and not be abused}. Yes, this Āyah indicates the prescription of the veil and commands it, but Āyatul Ḥijāb is {And when you ask [his wives] for something, ask them from behind a partition}, which explicitly mentions the Ḥijāb.
If this command is addressed to the wives of the Prophet ﷺ who are the noblest and purest women of the Ummah, then it applies even more to other women."
