Ruling on congratulating Christians on Christmas

The Prophet (ﷺ) said:

‘Whoever imitates a people is one of them.’

[Abu Dawud]

“Wishing Christians a merry Christmas is not permissible by unanimous agreement of the Four schools of thought.

I do not know of an opposing view in this matter except in recent times, and they are views that are insignificant.

Marrying a Christian or Jewish woman does not necessarily mean that you congratulate her on her religious holiday.

It is permissible to marry the daughter of your father’s murderer, but just as you would never accept her joy on the anniversary of his killing, you would never accept her joy over the birth of a son for Allah Almighty.

It is not permissible to congratulate a Christian for the lie of the birth of a son of God, even if he congratulates you for the ‘Īd of Islam, because Allah’s rulings are not interchangeable. You’re not allowed to glorify an idol simply because an idolator entered the masjid with you.”
