Biography of the SAFIYYAH BINT 'ABDUL-MUTTALIB (رضي الله عنها)

SAFIYYAH BINT 'ABDUL-MUTTALIB (رضي الله عنها)

Safiyyah bint 'Abdul-Muttalib al-Hashimi,
she is the full sister of Hamzah.
She is the mother of the disciple of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ
, az-Zubayr.
Her mother was from the tribe of Banu Zuhrah.

Her Marriage:
She married al-Harith, the brother of Abu Sufyan bin Harb, and he died while married to her.
Then she married al-'Awam, the brother of the best of women-Khadijah bint Khuwaylid.

Her children:
While married to him (al 'awam), she gave birth to
Az-Zubayr
As-Sa'ib
Abdul-Ka'bah.

The tribe of Banul-'Awam is the tribe which defended the Messenger of Allah.
It is the viewpoint of some scholars that she was the only paternal aunt of the Prophet ﷺ
 to enter Islam.

She was deeply grieved by the death of her brother Hamzah, but she was patient and she sought the reward from Allah through her patience.

She was from those who migrated during the first migration, its not clear if she accepted Islam with her brother Hamzah or with her son az-Zubayr.

Her Courage:
During the Battle of the Trench, Safiyyah was in the fortress of Hasan bin Thabit with the women and children, as the men were off in battle.

She said,
"Hasan was with us when a spy sent by the Jews passed by the fortress, and he began to circle the fortress while the Muslims were engaging their enemy."
She said,
"I was the first woman to kill a man.
Hasan was with us when a spy from the Jews began to circle the fortress.
I said to Hasan, 'I don't trust him, he is going to inform the enemy of our location, so stand up and go kill him.'
Hasan replied, 'May Allah forgive you.
You know I am not able to do this.
So I fortified myself, grabbed a pole, and went down and struck him until I killed him."

Her death:
Safiyyah died in 20 AH, and she was buried in al-Baqi'.
She was in her 70s.

Aishah said:
When the verse was revealed:
وَأَنذِرْ عَشِيرَتَكَ الأَقْرَبِينَ
"And warn thy nearest kindred,"
the Messenger of Allah stood up on Safa and said,
"O Fatimah, daughter of Muhammad.
O Safiyyah, daughter of 'Abdul-Muttalib,
O sons of 'Abdul-Muttalib.
I have nothing which can avail you against Allah, you may ask me what you want of my worldly belongings."
(Sahih Muslim 205)

End.

Some Notes from the book 📙
Chapter
Safiyyah Bint Abdul Muttalib:

- Her son As-Sa'ib is from the noble Companions,
he witnessed many battles, such as the Battle of Badr.
He was martyred at the Battle of Yamamah.

- About Hassan Bin Thabit when he diddnt kill the jewish man.
The scholars of history mention that this was likely due to his age or a medical condition, not his lack of bravery, because his bravery is well documented.
