Fasting on Ashura: A Day of Fasting and Remembrance for Muslims

The Importance of Fasting on Ashura in Islam

AASHOORAA ( 10th Of Muharram) & FASTING

▪ Ashura is 10th of Muharram.

▪ Ashura is derived from word “ Ashrah” meaning, “ten”

๐Ÿ“Œ Fasting the day of ‘Ashoora’ does expiate for the past year,

๐Ÿ Because the Prophet ๏ทบ said:
“Fasting the day of ‘Arafah I hope Allaah will expiate thereby for the year before it and the year after it, and fasting the day of ‘Ashoora’ I hope Allaah will expiate thereby for the year that came before it.”

๐Ÿ“š Muslim, 1162

๐ŸŒŸ This is by the bounty that Allah bestows upon us, whereby fasting one day expiates for the sins of a whole year. And Allah is the Owner of great bounty.

๐Ÿ’ซ Musa ุนู„ูŠู‡ ุงู„ุณู„ุงู… fasted this day to show gratitude to Allah for drowning Pharaoh and his followers.

๐Ÿ Therefore he fasted this day and the Jews continued to fast this day after him.

๐ŸŒˆ When the Prophet ๏ทบ arrived in Madinah after migrating, he found the Jews fasting this day.

๐ŸŒฟ He ๏ทบ said:

“What is this day you are fasting?”

๐ŸŒฟ They said:

“Indeed this is the day Allah empowered Musa ุนู„ูŠู‡ ุงู„ุณู„ุงู… and his followers and humiliated and debased Pharaoh and his followers. Musa ุนู„ูŠู‡ ุงู„ุณู„ุงู… fasted this day therefore we fast this day”.

๐Ÿ”ฎ The Prophet ๏ทบ said:

“ We have more right to Musa than you”(or…we are closer to Musa than you).

☑️ Therefore the Prophet ๏ทบ fasted this day and he commanded the people to fast.

๐ŸŒฟ Ibn ‘Abbas, who said:

‘The messenger of Allah ๏ทบ commanded us to fast ‘Aashooraa’, the tenth day of muharram.’

๐Ÿ“š Reported by Al-Tirmidhi,

✔️ Consequently fasting this day became a confirmed Sunnah.

▪ The fasting for us is recommended to be on 9th & 10th ( OR) 10th & 11th to differentiate from jews.

๐Ÿ’ข As the Prophet ๏ทบ wanted for us to differ from the Jews, thus he commanded us to fast the day prior which is the ninth day.

๐Ÿ“Œ It is mustahabb (encouraged) to fast Taasoo’aa’ with ‘Aashooraa’

๐Ÿ”– Abd-Allah Ibn ‘Abbas ุฑุถูŠ ุงู„ู„ู‡ ุนู†ู‡ู… said:

๐ŸŒฟ “When the messenger of Allah ๏ทบ fasted on ‘Aashooraa’ and commanded the Muslims to fast as well, they said,

‘o messenger of Allah ๏ทบ, it is a day that is venerated by the Jews and Christians.

the messenger of Allah ๏ทบ said,

‘if I live to see the next year, Insha’Allah, we will fast on the ninth day too.’

but it so happened that the messenger of Allah ๏ทบ passed away before the next year came.”

๐Ÿ“š Reported by Muslim, 1916

๐ŸŒฟ One narration reads
‘or fast the day after it’.

๐Ÿ“Œ But fasting the ninth day (the day prior of Ashura) is more confirmed.

๐Ÿ“ Therefore the person fasts this day following the example of the Prophets of Allah; (emulating) Musa ุนู„ูŠู‡ ุงู„ุณู„ุงู… and (emulating) Muhammad ๏ทบ in his fast.

๐ŸŒŠ It is the day Allah empowered the Muslims by the hand of Musa ุนู„ูŠู‡ ุงู„ุณู„ุงู…. Thus it is the help of Allah for the believers until the hour (Day of Judgment) is established. It is a favor from Allah which He is to be thanked for, and this by fasting.

✔️ This Sunnah has continued throughout the Ummah and all praises belong to Allah.

๐ŸŒˆ Thus the person sees this fast as imperative, seeking the reward, the recompense, and showing gratitude to Allah the Exalted.
