The Significance of 'Āshūrā: A Day of Fasting and Reflection

The Virtue of Fasting on 'Āshūrā: A Prophetic Tradition

THE FAST OF 'ĀSHŪRĀ

ALLĀH has given us a calendar with periods of time to increase our worship, reflect and renew our faith. Amidst our fast-paced lives, we need these times as a re-energizer, and a reminder to gain or carry on with momentum to strive for the Hereafter. Ramadān has passed, so have the 10 Days of Dhul Hijjah, as well as the two Eids; now we have 'Āshūrā, which is the 10th day of Muharram.

Ibn ‘Abbās (may ALLĀH be pleased with them) said: The Prophet (ﷺ) came to Madīnah and saw the Jews fasting on the day of ‘Āshūrā. He said, “What is this?” They said, “This is a good day, this is the day when ALLĀH saved the Children of Israel from their enemy and Mūsā (peace be upon him) fasted on this day.” He said, “We are closer to Mūsā than you.” So he fasted on this day and told the people to fast.” {Al-Bukhārī #1865}

So, the Prophet (ﷺ) fasted on the Day of 'Āshūrā and he ordered the people fast be performed on it. When he was asked about the virtue of fasting on it, the Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Fasting the day of ‘Ashoora I hope ALLĀH will expiate thereby for the year that came before it.” {Muslim #1162}

However, after that, he (ﷺ) commanded that the Muslims should be different from the Jews by fasting the tenth and the day before it, which is the ninth or the day after it, which is the eleventh.

Ibn 'Abbās (may ALLĀH be pleased with them) quoted the Prophet (ﷺ) as saying, “If I live next year, I shall also fast on the 9th day.” {Musnad Aḥmad #1971}

Imam Ahmad (may ALLĀH have mercy on him) said: "Whoever wants to fast 'Āshūrā should fast on the ninth and the tenth, unless there is some uncertainty about the months, in which case he should fast for three days. Ibn Sireen said that." {Al-Mughni, 4/441}

Ibn Hajar (may ALLĀH have mercy on him)said: “The fast of Āshūrā has three levels: the lowest is to fast one day, the next is to fast the ninth day along with it, and the next is to fast the ninth, tenth, and eleventh days. ALLĀH knows best.” {Fath al-Bari, 1896}

May ALLĀH make it easy for us to fulfill this Prophetic tradition.

Understanding the Significance of Ashura: Fasting on the 10th of Muharram Header

The Importance of Ashura: Fasting and Its Historical Context

🌙THE MONTH OF AL-MUHARRAM🌙

❗️Tenth of al-Muharram & Killing of al-Hussain رضي الله عنه❗️

🎓 Shaykh Abdul Qadir Muhammad Al Junaid (حفظه الله)

📌 There is NO relationship between fasting on tenth of al-Muharram & killing of al-Hussain bin Ali bin Abi Taalib رضي الله عنهم which took place in the 61 Hijri.

But its fasting and its name as the day of عاشوراء is from the days of ignorance before the advent of Rasoolullaah   صلى الله عليه وسلم.

We fast on this day as a mark of gratitude to Allaah for saving موسى كليم الله from the enemy of Allah, Pharoah & his army.

And he who legislated fasting as Thanksgiving to Allah for us, is Rasoolullaah صلى الله عليه وسلم and had he not legislated it for us, we would've never fasted it.

The Significance of Muharram: Understanding the Sacred Month

The Importance of Muharram in Islam

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم.

⭕ RED SIGNAL TO THOSE WHO SIN.

>>> IMPORTANCE OF SACRED MONTHS. [الشهر الحرام] جو <<<

📆 The Prophet ﷺ said :

"The year is twelve months, of which four are sacred: three consecutive months, Dhu al-Qa‘dah, Dhu al-Hijjah and Muharram, and Rajab of Mudar which comes between Jumaada and Sha‘baan.”

📚 Narrated by al-Bukhaari 2958

▪Muharram [محرم] ، is so called because it is a sacred month [الشهر الحرام] ; this further emphasizes its sanctity.

💢 The words from Qurān are so stressing & emphasising the importance of months :

فلا تظلموا فيهن انفسكم

“so wrong not yourselves therein”

📗 Soorat at-Tawbah # 36

Meaning:

(do not wrong yourselves) in these sacred months, because doing so is a greater sin than at other times.

〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️

🚨 _>>>RED SIGNAL TO THOSE WHO CONTINUE TO SIN.<<<_ 🚨

☘️ It was narrated that Ibn ‘Abbaas رضي الله عنه said, concerning the words of Allah _“so wrong not yourselves thereinnot

📕 [Soorat at-Tawbah # 36]:

💢 (The command not to wrong yourself) applies in all months, then Allah singled out four months and made them sacred, and emphasised their sanctity, and He made sin during these months more grave, and He made righteous deeds and the reward thereof greater.

☘️ Qataadah said, concerning the words “so wrong not yourselves therein”:

💢 Commiting Sins, during the sacred months is more serious and incurs a greater burden of sin than in other months. Wrongdoing is a serious matter in any circumstances, but Allah makes whatever He wills of His commands carry more weight.

〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️

💫 *SELECTION FROM ALLAH* 💫

Allah has chosen elites from His creation:

🍁 Apart from the angels He chose Messengers .

🍁 From among mankind He chose Messengers,

🍁 From among speech He chose remembrance of Him (dhikr),

🍁 From among spaces on earth He chose the mosques,

🍁 From among the months He chose Ramadan and the sacred months,

🍁 From among days He chose Friday (Jumu‘ah),

🍁 And from among nights He chose Laylat al-Qadr.

🔘 So venerate that which has been chosen by Allah, for people of understanding and wisdom respect that which has been chosen by Allah.

📌 The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

“The best fast after Ramadan is in the month of Allah, Muharram.”

Tips to start the Muharram

Tips to start off this year for your spiritual hijrah

As we enter the new Islamic year, in the sacred month of Muharram, we are reminded of a significant milestone in the history of Islam - The Great Hijrah (Migration). We recall the long and difficult journey from Mecca to Medina taken by the Prophet (ﷺ) and his companions after being subjected to years of persecution, oppression and hostility.

Marking the beginning of a new Islamic year, the hijrah serves as a great reminder to us all. It reminds us of a new chapter in the lives of the early Muslims and the sacrifices they made to become the exemplary Muslims of all time.
Now that we have entered the new year, what spiritual hijrah will you be making?

Here are some tips to start off this year for your spiritual hijrah:

1. Start sacrificing some sleep and plan to wake up every night for Tahajjud (Night Prayers) and Insha'Allaah you’ll feel the great difference in your life.

2. Set a specific amount of Qur'an you want to read, memorize and understand every day, and ensure that a day doesn’t pass until you’ve done it.

3. Make a promise to yourself to quit any bad habits such as listening to music, watching movies/tv shows, smoking, gossip, lying, backbiting, wasting time…..

4. Start following the sunnah more and if you are lacking in the obligatory acts of worship, this is the time to start. For sisters who haven’t worn the hijab yet, place your intentions and start from now. For the men who haven’t grown the beard and is lacking in lowering the gaze, this is your time. Start practicing modesty not only in the way you look, but in your character, manners and behaviors as well.

5. Forgive and practice more patience with others. Avoid getting angry or impatient and try your best to let go of the trivial issues and pardon those who have fallen into mistakes.

6. Devote more time with your parents, be patient with them and let go of any differences to avoid falling into disagreements and always try to make them happy. If you are married or away from them, make it a habit to call them every single day so that they know that you love them, care for them and will always appreciate everything they’ve done for you.

7. Keep away from that which is unhealthy to your mind and body. Whether it’s unhealthy food, laziness, and unhealthy environment, toxic friends…… make a change to better your physical and mental health from staying away from that which will harm you.

8. Set a goal which you want to achieve for the Sake of Allāh this year and work for it. Whether it’s changing the lives of unfortunate and needy families, whether it’s initiating a program which contributes to the betterment of the Ummah, whether it’s helping a good cause, seeking and teaching others beneficial knowledge….etc. just set a consistent goal which will bring about any positive changes.

9. Always make an intention for your every deed, action and speech you say or do regarding both the dunya and deen, Whether it’s eating, sleeping, going to work, going to the gym, going to school, visiting family or friends, cooking, learning something new…. Connect it all back to Allāh. Placing an intention in what you do for the sake of Allāh will reap you great rewards.

10. If you haven’t already, make sure a day doesn’t pass except that you recite the morning and evening adhkar (remembrance of Allāh) with a present heart. The Adhkar is an important part of every Muslim life which serves as protection from all evil, blessings in your life, well being in this life and next and contentment and peace in your heart by the will of Allāh. Always include much Dhikr in your daily life and watch the blessings of Allāh shower upon you.

May Allāh guide us all to which pleases Him and make us all from His beloved, A'meen

What is the REWARD FOR FASTING AASHOORA (10th OF MUHARRAM)

REWARD FOR FASTING AASHOORA (10th OF MUHARRAM)

The Prophet ﷺ was asked about observing the fast on the 10th day of Muharram, and he ﷺ replied: "I anticipate that Allah will forgive (due to it) the sins of the preceding year."
(Muslim)

The Prophet ﷺ said: “If I live till the next year, I would definitely observe fast on the 9th (in addition to 10th of Muharram)."
(Muslim)

In another hadith, the Prophet ﷺ said to fast, along with Aashoora, either a day before it or a day after it as well. (Ahmed)

What are the virtues of Muharram

THE VIRTUE OF THE MONTH OF ALLĀH, AL-MUHARRAM

Abu Hurayrah said that ALLAH'S Messenger (ﷺ) said, "The best fast after Ramadān is in the month of ALLĀH, al-Muharram, and the best prayer after the obligatory one is the night prayer."

In another narration, "The prayer in the middle of the night." {Muslim #1163}

This hadith is evidence for the virtue of fasting in the Month of ALLĀH, al-Muharram, and that its virtue follows the virtue of the month of Ramadān. The virtue of fasting during it comes from the virtue of its time and the greatness of the reward for acts done during it and because fasting is one of the greatest actions with ALLĀH, the Most High. It is also evidence that voluntary salah in the middle of the night is better than voluntary şalah in the daytime.

The Month of ALLĀH, al-Muharram, is the month which begins the hijrī year. It is one of the sacred months which ALLĀH mentioned in HIS Book. The Most High said,
"Verily, the number of months with ALLĀH is twelve, so it was ordained by ALLĀH on the day when HE created the heavens and the earth; of which four are sacred. That is the right religion, so do not wrong yourselves therein." {At-Tawbah: Verse 36}

Abū Bakrah (may ALLĀH be pleased with him) said that the Prophet (ﷺ) said, "...The year is twelve months, from them four are sacred; three are consecutive: Dhul-Qa'dah, Dhul-Hijjah and al-Muharram, and Rajab of Mudar which is between Jumādā and Sha'ban." {Al-Bukhārī #4662 and Muslim #1679}

ALLĀH, the Most High, attached this month to HIMSELF to show its attached honor and greatness. It is not authentic that the Prophet (ﷺ) attached any month to ALLĀH, the Most High, except al-Muharram. It is called al-Muharram to confirm its sacredness because the Arabs used to switch it around, treating it as sacred one year and not others.

The Most High's statement,

فَلَا تَظْلِمُوا فِيهِنَّ أَنْفُسَكُمْ
(So do not wrong yourselves therein,) means: in these sacred months, because sins in them are intensified and more serious than in other months.

Ibn 'Abbas (may ALLĀH be pleased with them) said: "Indeed, ALLĀH made sins in them greater, as well as righteous deeds and their rewards greater." {Ibn Jarir 10/126}

Qatādah said: "Indeed, wrong-doing in the sacred months is a greater offense and sin than wrong-doing in other than them; though wrong-doing in every situation is great. But ALLĀH enhances what HE wills." {Ibn Jarir 10/127}

Included in wrong-doing is: a person wronging himself by associating partners with ALLĀH, the Most High, or by abandoning obligations, committing prohibitions, being careless regarding salāh or failing to attend Jumu'ah and congregational prayers.

Fasting the Ninth, Tenth, and Eleventh of Muharram: A Guide for Muslims

Fasting the Ninth, Tenth AND Eleventh of al-Muharram

🍃 Al-Hafidh Ibn Hajar said:

“…Fasting Aashooraa (10th of Muharram) comes under three categories;

🔹the lowest is to fast it alone,

🔹better than it, is to fast the ninth day with it, and

🔹the BEST is to fast the ninth AND the eleventh days with it”
[Fath Al-Bari by Ibn Hajar (4/246)]

In other words, it’s BEST if we fast the ninth, tenth and eleventh of al-Muharram.

We all know that fasting on the Day of Aashooraa (meaning the tenth of Muharram) and the day before it, is recommended.

🍃 Ibn Abbaas radhi Allaahu anhumaa said:

“When the Messenger of Allaah  observed fast on the day of Aashooraa, and ordered Muslims to fast on it, they said to him: “O Messenger of Allaah!
This is a day which both the Jews and the Christians venerate.
Upon this, the Messenger of Allaah  said, “When it is the next year, In Shaa’ Allaah, we would observe fast on the ninth day (of Al-Muharram besides that day)”.
But, it was not until the next year that the Messenger of Allaah Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam had died”
(Saheeh Muslim 2666)

However, there are reasons why the ulama say it’s recommended to fast the eleventh as well.

For example:

1️⃣ There’s a statement of Ibn Abbaas radhi Allaahu anhumaa that recommends fasting on the eleventh as well.

🍃 Ibn Abbaas radhi Allaahu anhumaa said:

“Fast the day of Aashooraa’, be different from Jews, fast one day before it or one day after it”
(At-Tabari in “Tahdheeb Al-Athar” (Musnad Umar/1430); authentic by Al-Albaani as “Mawqoof”)

“Mawqoof” is a tradition attributed to a Sahaabi.

And we all know that it’s ALL the Sahaabah are trustworthy and they would not say anything about the Deen that’s of their own thoughts.
They would only say that which was proven or approved by the Prophet sal Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam.

2️⃣ Also another reason to fast on the eleventh is to make sure that you have fasted on the tenth.
That’s because sometimes there’s a mistake in the sighting of the moon.

So by fasting on the ninth, the tenth AND the eleventh, we can be SURE that we’ve fasted the day of Aashooraa.

3️⃣ In any case, it’s good to fast as many days in Muharram as possible.

🍃 The Prophet sal Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam said:

“The best fast after Ramadhaan is the month of Allaah, al-Muharram.”  (Saheeh Muslim 1163)

That’s why the Salaf were keen to fast the ninth, tenth AND eleventh of al-Muharram.

🍃 Imam Ahmad said:

“whoever wants to fast ‘Ashooraa’ should fast on the ninth and the tenth, unless there is some uncertainty about the months, in which case he should fast for three days.” (Al-Mughni, 4/441)

🍃 Ibn Abi Shaybah reported:
“Tawoos used to fast one day before it (the 10th) and one day after it, for fear of missing it.” [al-Musannaf (2/313)]

🍃Shaikh Muhammad Ali Ferkous said:

“It is also recommended to fast the day preceding ‘Aashooraa’ which is the ninth day of the month Al-Muharram as it is mentioned in the hadeeth of Ibn Abbaas.
Furthermore, it is recommended to fast a day AFTER Aashooraa’, that is to say, the ELEVENTH day of the month of Al-Muharram, as it is narrated in an authentic and mawqoof text according to Ibn Abbaas radhi Allaahu anhumaa: “Fast the day of Aashooraa; be different from Jews, fast one day before it or one day after it” (Fatwa # 817)

🍃 And Shaikh Ibn Baaz said:

“One may also observe fast on all three days, i.e. the ninth, the tenth, and the eleventh of Muharram as is reported in some narrations: “Fast a day before (the Day of ‘Ashooraa’) and a day after it.”

🍃And he said:

“fasting the ninth (of Muharram) along with the tenth is better.
If one fasts the tenth along with the eleventh then that suffices due to differing from the Jews, and if one fasts them both together along with the tenth then there is no harm.”(Majmoo’ Fataawa vol 15 p.403)

And Allaah knows best.

Fasting on Ashura: A Day of Fasting and Remembrance for Muslims

The Importance of Fasting on Ashura in Islam

AASHOORAA ( 10th Of Muharram) & FASTING

▪ Ashura is 10th of Muharram.

▪ Ashura is derived from word “ Ashrah” meaning, “ten”

📌 Fasting the day of ‘Ashoora’ does expiate for the past year,

🍁 Because the Prophet ﷺ said:
“Fasting the day of ‘Arafah I hope Allaah will expiate thereby for the year before it and the year after it, and fasting the day of ‘Ashoora’ I hope Allaah will expiate thereby for the year that came before it.”

📚 Muslim, 1162

🌟 This is by the bounty that Allah bestows upon us, whereby fasting one day expiates for the sins of a whole year. And Allah is the Owner of great bounty.

💫 Musa عليه السلام fasted this day to show gratitude to Allah for drowning Pharaoh and his followers.

🍁 Therefore he fasted this day and the Jews continued to fast this day after him.

🌈 When the Prophet ﷺ arrived in Madinah after migrating, he found the Jews fasting this day.

🌿 He ﷺ said:

“What is this day you are fasting?”

🌿 They said:

“Indeed this is the day Allah empowered Musa عليه السلام and his followers and humiliated and debased Pharaoh and his followers. Musa عليه السلام fasted this day therefore we fast this day”.

🔮 The Prophet ﷺ said:

“ We have more right to Musa than you”(or…we are closer to Musa than you).

☑️ Therefore the Prophet ﷺ fasted this day and he commanded the people to fast.

🌿 Ibn ‘Abbas, who said:

‘The messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded us to fast ‘Aashooraa’, the tenth day of muharram.’

📚 Reported by Al-Tirmidhi,

✔️ Consequently fasting this day became a confirmed Sunnah.

▪ The fasting for us is recommended to be on 9th & 10th ( OR) 10th & 11th to differentiate from jews.

💢 As the Prophet ﷺ wanted for us to differ from the Jews, thus he commanded us to fast the day prior which is the ninth day.

📌 It is mustahabb (encouraged) to fast Taasoo’aa’ with ‘Aashooraa’

🔖 Abd-Allah Ibn ‘Abbas رضي الله عنهم said:

🌿 “When the messenger of Allah ﷺ fasted on ‘Aashooraa’ and commanded the Muslims to fast as well, they said,

‘o messenger of Allah ﷺ, it is a day that is venerated by the Jews and Christians.

the messenger of Allah ﷺ said,

‘if I live to see the next year, Insha’Allah, we will fast on the ninth day too.’

but it so happened that the messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away before the next year came.”

📚 Reported by Muslim, 1916

🌿 One narration reads
‘or fast the day after it’.

📌 But fasting the ninth day (the day prior of Ashura) is more confirmed.

📍 Therefore the person fasts this day following the example of the Prophets of Allah; (emulating) Musa عليه السلام and (emulating) Muhammad ﷺ in his fast.

🌊 It is the day Allah empowered the Muslims by the hand of Musa عليه السلام. Thus it is the help of Allah for the believers until the hour (Day of Judgment) is established. It is a favor from Allah which He is to be thanked for, and this by fasting.

✔️ This Sunnah has continued throughout the Ummah and all praises belong to Allah.

🌈 Thus the person sees this fast as imperative, seeking the reward, the recompense, and showing gratitude to Allah the Exalted.

Fasting on the 9th and 11th of Muharram: The Best Way to Gain Allah's Reward

The Importance of Fasting on the 9th and 11th of Muharram

𝐅𝐀𝐒𝐓𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐎𝐍 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝟗𝐓𝐇 𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝟏𝟏𝐓𝐇 𝐎𝐅 𝐌𝐔𝐇𝐀𝐑𝐑𝐀𝐌

Along with fasting on the 10th of Muḥarram, we should try to fast on the 9th and 11th as well due to the following narrations:

ʿAbdullāh b. ʿAbbās (radiy Allāhu ʿanhumā) said, “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘If I live to see the next year, if Allah wills, 𝘄𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗳𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝟵𝘁𝗵 𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝘁𝗼𝗼 (alongside the 10th Muḥarram).’ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away before the next year came.” (Muslim 1134)

He ﷺ also said, “Fast the Day of ʿĀshūrā’, and 𝗯𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗝𝗲𝘄𝘀 by fasting a day before it or a day after it.” (Aḥmad 2155, Ibn Khuzaymah 2095)

On this basis it may be said that there are varying degrees of fasting ʿĀshūrā’, the least of which is to fast only on the 10th and the best of which is to fast the 9th, 10th and 11th. The more one fasts in Muḥarram, the better it is.

𝗢𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝟭: (and this is the best option): Fast the 9th, 10th and 11th

𝗢𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝟮: Fast the 9th and 10th

𝗢𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝟯: Fast the 10th and 11th

𝗢𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝟰: Fast only the 10th

There are three levels of fasting on ‘Āshūrā’:

𝟭). Fasting on the 9th, 10th and 11th which is the most complete.

𝟮). Fasting on the 9th and 10th

𝟯). Fasting only on the 10th.

🟠 Do Extra Good Deeds This Month:

Good deeds during this month bring a greater reward than in other months.
Ibn ‘Abbaas said in the tafseer for the above Ayah, that good deeds done during the four sacred months bring a greater reward.

What is the virtue of the month of Muharram

The virtue of the month of Muharram

The Messenger of Allah صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ said:

أَفْضَلُ الصِّيَامِ بَعْدَ رَمَضَانَ شَهْرُ اللَّهِ الْمُحَرَّمُ

The best fast after Ramadan is the month of Allah; al-Muharram

Therefore it is recommended to increase fasting during this month

It (Muharram) is also from the sacred months.
Among the four, Dhul Qadah, Dhul Hijjah, Muharram, Rajjab.

It is the month the companions selected to be the first month of the Hijri year—during the Caliph of Umar رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ.

Thus it is a month of virtue.

From its greatest virtues is that it contains the Day of Ashura
The Prophet صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ informed us that fasting this day will expiate for the previous year💎

Musa عليه السلام fasted this day to show gratitude to Allah for drowning Pharaoh and his followers

. Therefore he fasted this day and the Jews continued to fast this day after him.

When the Prophet صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ arrived in Madinah after migrating, he found the Jews fasting this day. He said: “What is this day you are fasting?” They said: “Indeed this is the day Allah empowered Musa and his followers and humiliated and debased Pharaoh and his followers. Musa عليه السلام fasted this day therefore we fast this day
”.

The Prophet صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ said: “We have more right to Musa than you” (or…we are closer to Musa than you). Therefore the Prophet صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ fasted this day and he commanded the people to fast

Consequently, fasting this day became a confirmed Sunnah.

But the Prophet صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ wanted for us to differ from the Jews, thus he commanded us to fast the day prior which is the ninth day.

One narration reads ‘or fast the day after it’. But fasting the ninth day (the day prior of Ashura) is more confirmed.

Therefore the person fasts this day following the example of the Prophets of Allah; (emulating) Musa عليه السلام and (emulating) Muhammad صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ in his fast.

To be continued,
