Biography of UMM AL-FADL (R.A)

UMM AL-FADL (رضي الله عنها)

The mother of six nomble companions

She is Umm al-Fadl bint al-Harith
bin Hazn bin Bujayr,
the wife of al 'Abbas (the uncle of the Prophet).
She is the mother of six of his noble sons:

• Al-Fadl bin al-'Abbas

• 'Abdullah bin al-'Abbas

• 'Ubaydullah bin al-'Abbas

• Quthum bin al-'Abbas

• 'Abdur-Rahman bin al-'Abbas

• Ma'bad bin al-'Abbas

Her name is Lubabah.
She is the sister of the Prophet's wife Maymunah, and she is the maternal aunt of Khalid bin al-Walid.
She is likewise the sister of Asma' bint Umays, sharing the same mother with her.

She was from the first and foremost to embrace Islam.
It is said that she was the first woman to accept Islam after Khadijah.

Her son 'Abdullah bin al-'Abbas said:

كُنْتُ أَنَا وَأُمِّي، مِنَ الْمُسْتَضْعَفِينَ أَنَا مِنَ الْوِلْدَانِ، وَأُمِّي، مِنَ النِّسَاءِ.

My mother and I were among the weak and oppressed, I was from the children, and my mother was from the women.“

This indicates that both of them accepted Islam before al 'Abbas, and they were unable to migrate.

Umm al-Fadl was from the prominent women.
After the conquest of Makkah, al 'Abbas took her to Madinah.

She narrated a number of aḥadith.
Those who narrated from her include her son 'Abdullah bin al-'Abbas, Anas bin Malik, Abdullah bin al-Harith, and others.
Her narrations have been collected in the six books of hadith.

Her Mother:
The mother of Umm al-Fadl Lubabah is Hind bint 'Awf al-Harith.
She is known as "the noblest mother-in-law."
This is because the Prophet married her daughter Maymunah,
al 'Abbas married her daughter Lubabah the Elder,
Ja'far bin Abi Talib, Abu Bakr as Siddiq, and 'Ali bin Abi Talib were all married to her daughter Asma'
bint 'Umays,
Hamzah bin 'Abdul-Muttalib married her daughter Salma bint 'Umays.
And al Walid bin al-Mughirah married her daughter Lubabah the Younger.

Her Death:
She died during 'Uthman bin 'Affan's caliphate.

Note from the book 📙
Chapter Umm Al Fadl :

- About Umm al-Fadl & Abu Lahab:
Abu Rafi', the freed slave of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, was under the care of al 'Abbas while in Makkah, and he concealed his Islam due to the oppression of the pagans.
Abu Lahab stayed behind from the Battle of Badr.
When Abu Sufyan returned from Badr, Abu Lahab asked him,
"Which side was victorious?"
Abu Sufyan replied, "They killed us however they wanted, and captured us however they wanted, but I don't blame our people."
Abu Lahab said, "Why not?"
Abu Sufyan said, "By Allah, I saw men dressed in all white riding piebald horses, and nothing could harm them!"

Abu Rafi' said,
"Upon hearing this, I said, "Those were angels!'
So Abu Lahab slapped me across my face, threw me to the ground, and stood over me and began to beat me, until he was kneeling on my chest.
Umm al-Fadl stood up, grabbed a tent pole, and struck Abu Lahab in the head, fracturing his skull.
She said, 'O enemy of Allah, you think it's okay to attack him because his master is not here?!"

Abu Lahab's wound became septic and he died seven days later from an ulcer.
His sons left his body inside his home for two or three nights until his body began to decay.
A man from the Quraysh said,
"Are you not ashamed to leave the decaying body of your father in his home?"
They replied, "We are afraid of the ulcer."
So they then sent in slaves to remove his body.
It was hosed with water from a distance, and then pushed with poles into a grave outside Makkah, and stones were thrown over it.
